Kampfgruppe Richter in Budel. Dilemma, fight the allies or retreat?

A Very British Civil War Note: this is clearly a “what-if” scenario, loosely based on the bustling miniatures war gaming off-shoot of the same name. Outstanding work has been done by Solway Crafts and Miniatures, and I credit them with the brilliance of this war gaming theme. Background England, May 1938 (designer note: note the in-game calendar notes “1944”; this is only to create the optics of lush green environment of the British Isles) Weather: overcast, mild, dry The very social fabric of Great Britain was torn during the apocalypse that was The Great War. The mightiest empire on the globe ended victorious, but at what cost? The rigid social hierarchy was shaken, and the world wide waves of social change did not stop at the English Channel. Class structure, worker’s rights, regional animosities have all brewed in the decades following the Great War. This has all been exacerbated by the crippling economic crisis of the 1930s, to which the ever cautious government responded to by constricting public spending ever more. In May 1937, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom married Wallis Simpson. The marriage to Wallis was not supported by Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister; and King Edward refused to abdicate. This marriage left the British government, and most of the people, alienated; and public hatred for King Edward and Queen Wallis rose. Parliament was torn, and in the general election of 1937, Baldwin was defeated. The Conservative party, ripped by the issue of King Edward’s marriage, as well as economic and regional tensions, broke apart, and a large segment of the Tory support went to the British Union of Fascists. Oswald Mosley’s promise to ensure public order, and shore up the Empire, resonated with a public tired of public disturbances, strikes in essential services, and the economic malaise. The Labour party too split, with the more radical sections forming their own splinter parties which ran their own candidates. The 1937 election results saw a fractured parliament, and although only winning slightly over 200 seats, and less than 30% of the vote, the BUF formed the largest caucus in the House of Commons. King Edward VIII asked Oswald Mosely to form a government. Mosley did so and almost immediately issued “Orders of Council”, outlawing strikes, restricting collective bargaining, and establishing new offences for unauthorized public gatherings, and publishing “any article intended to alarm the public”. Any opposition was swiftly responded to, if not by the police, then by Mosely’s own BUF Blackshirts, the BUF’s paramilitary wing. In January 1938, a protest by Dockyard workers in Liverpool was brutally crushed by the BUF and elements of the Regular Army; and violent clashes began across the country; between the Kings troops and those of several other factions. The British Civil War has begun!
Factions: The outbreak of conflict led several groups to attempt to seize the country or their own personal goals. Major factions included: On the Right (Axis in this scenario * The Edwardian Army – elements of the professional Army, bound to King Edward VIII. * The Royal Navy and Royal Marines – bound by tradition and culture to remain loyal to the reigning monarch, and the majority have done so. * The British Union of Fascists (or “BUF”) – the dominant political party, led by Oswald MOSLEY and heavily backed by German and Italian interests. Mosley has garnered considerable support in his efforts to restore order internally and restore the status of Britain’s Empire * The Mosley Youth – a “social club” of young men, who have been drilled and armed by unknown sources, and have formed para-military units to push the BUF agenda. * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Contingents from other fascist and imperialist sympathizers have been formed. Here we will see the presence of the “Hanoverian Legion”, volunteers from Germany, who are backing the Edwardian and BUF efforts On the Left (Allied in this scenario) * The Albertine Army – elements of the regular forces, plus most of the “Territorial Army”, backing the young Prince Albert’s claim to the throne. * The Anglican League - A large army led by a group of bishops and archbishops, they were aligned with the Albertine Army. Many are veterans of the Great War. * The People’s Party Army - Made up of disillusioned Labour party supporters, disgruntled workers and Spanish Civil War veterans, they are seeking to turn Britain into a Socialist state based upon Lenin's Russia. * The Farmer’s Union: radical small plot farmers and farm working hands, seeking better pay, price subsidies, and land redistribution. They are heavily influenced by Marxist doctrine. * The Student’s Union: like students before and after them, the university students have ramparts to thwart whomever they view as authoritarian, * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Groups of Americans, Canadians, and ANZAC units have been formed; here we will see the Lafayette Battalion, formed of French volunteers, many fresh from the savage fighting in Spain. This scenario occurs in the West Coast port town of Twaddlemore. Twaddlemore is the home base for a small Royal Navy destroyer flotilla, as well as being a mid-sized port for international commerce. Given that the United Kingdom lives or dies based on this freedom to trade overseas, the port is vital to all in this conflict. The Royal Navy, which for the most part has remained loyal to King Edward VIII, dispatched the flotilla two days ago to join the rest of the fleet, tasked with stemming the flow of foreign volunteers coming to fight for their faction of choice. Many of these foreigners have come directly from fighting for the Nationalists or the Republicans in Spain, who have endured two years of their own brutal Civil War already. Yesterday the dock workers, who are heavily influenced by communist agents and are affiliated with the People’s Party, refused to move armaments stored in the dock warehouses. Instead, they armed themselves and fighting broke out when security staff sought to control the situation. Who opened fire first is both in dispute and a moot point at this juncture. A company of the Army’s Provost Corps was rushed to Twaddlemore by train, but a bomb was used to derail the trail just outside of town. Multiple factions are either in town currently or rumoured to be headed this way. The Telephone Exchange is the key to communicating with the rest of the country, and is clearly a goal to secure. Likewise, the docks and the armaments stored there in are also of immense value. Lastly, the mysterious new Wireless Tower being built on the south shore is of unknown value, as the work crews are from “away” and appear to be quite Teutonic in manner. This battle will surely prove that the term “Civil War” is clearly a misnomer.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again. You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case. Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island. The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office. And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about. The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm. You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise. The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job. You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now. The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead. Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre. The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off. At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”
This scenario is 1) Meant strictly for play against the AI. Although it one player wants to try playing the Axis/Zombies, please feel free. 2) The scenario is meant to be strictly for fun. 3) Watch you ammo loads. Shoot for the head. You only have the ammo you brought into the fight.

Soviet vs. German Meeting Engagement. 60+ turns. Best played as: H2H (Not recommended for vs. AI play due to mounted infantry.)
In recent weeks, this industrial center has been the scene of increasingly sharp clashes between recon units and regular forces. Both sides have traded jabs over this important airplane fabrication city. Both have moved into the town and then been forced out again. No one seems to be able to hold it. The landing gear assembly plant on the edge of town was occupied by the Red Army a few days ago and then burned and destroyed as the Wehrmacht forced them out. Much of the town lies untouched, but the workers and residents know it is just a matter of time before a major battle rages through the streets of their city…
After another bloody engagement, both sides have backed off. Again, in the still of a Sunday morning under the cover of a pounding rainstorm, both sides push forces forward to gain possession of the city.
No one is sure where the front lines lie. Is the enemy in front of you? Or is he gone?
Push forward, as so many before you have tried, and hold this town once and for all!

Desiliens is an ancient Roman town. The map features the ruins of the town, an aquaduct, and the ruins of a villa on a low central hill.
The eastern side of the map is mostly woods, the west is hills and farms. It is most suitable for an assault on the town, but if the focus is shifted to the ruined villa it would be good for a meeting engagement.

Played as the German versus Russian AI. I liked the extreme FOW and limited visibility. I took a rather cautious approach and still beat the Russians to virtually all of the flags. Due to a fortunate placement of my spotter I was able to break up the Russian infantry pretty easily after losing a couple of tanks by being unnecessarily aggressive during the initial engagement. A Pz IV on one flank and the Marder on the other survived and caught the Russian attack in a crossfire thereafter. I won handily in the end.
**SPOILER** Late in the game I stumbled on the Russian truck park and don't quite understand what they were doing there. Their reaction to my half-track was lethargic. I wonder if they are there simply for point balance. I knocked a few out just for grins.
Summary: All in all this was good fun although I wonder if it isn't too easy for the Germans. I killed the Russian spotters early through plain luck and my own was well situated so maybe that's what made it relatively one sided.

Played it PBEM against human opponent. game neded prematurely due to autosurrender. Here is our comments. Hope they are useful:
Well, looks like the games autosurrender routine saved you from the trouble of fending off tanks at pistol point :-). Map was OK. A few hills, a crossroad (dominating terrain in daylight and hence awarded their respective V-flags by the designer) and a small central village surrounded by oversnowed hedged in farmland. None of it really important since LOS was a mere 250 meters, meaning that one could in effect hide in almost plain sight in the twilight. Lenght of the scenario also seems ok since there was ample time to force a decision. The scenario itself looks balanced enough. Once you subtract the points spent on soviet soft, wheeled transport (with no weapons) the two force are actually equal in terms of points. The german players units just cost more due to general higher quality (Veterans all around) and equipment. The soviet units are more numerous, but harder to coordinate (T34s lacking radios and cupolas) and some of them lacking punch (The T70s needing flanking shots in order to penetrate against 50mm front AFVs). This of course means that the german player has to capitalize on his and can ill afford to waste anything. On the plus side his units are more than capable if handled well. The german player has to trade at least 2:1 in order to win and preferably better (soviet starts with 10 AFVs plus two towed guns. German player has 5 AFVs). The soviet player can afford to be a bit more sloppy, but with C&C issues rearing it´s head is in danger of being caught flatfooted by the more freewheeling germans (main danger is T34s getting caught out of position and having to displace while buttoned, another danger being guns/infantry being caught while limbered/mounted on soft wheeled transport vehicles). The concentration of the V-hexes meant that we would probably clash somewhere in the village. Due to your location and access to the road net you were able to get there a little bit sooner than I was. You keep most of your force together (which is the most sensible solution) except the Marder (which is paradoxically the unit least suited to independent operations, since it is an assault gun with paper thin armour killable from the front by a lowly ATR). I have my force in an extended line with T34s+riders in the centre, flanked on each side by T70s with the infantry and towed guns lagging behind in order to be able to dismount before contact. The plan was to find your main force with the T34s and fix you, and then destroy you by maneuvering the T70s into flanking positions followed up by the infantry dismounting and reinforcing the attack on foot. The guns would unlimber at the edge of LOS and give some HE and smoke support plus a place for my infantry to fall back to if everything else went awry and you slaughtered my tanks. As it was, my plan worked out as predicted although it meant taking one on the chin in the proces (4 out of 6 T34s destroyed). You started out well enough by detecting me first through the prudent use of infantry scouting ahead, plinking a couple of buttoned T34s that didn´t even see their killers. The problem was that you quickly fell behind the curve again when I succesfully hit a MK IV in the flank as it tried to move into position (for some reason it was moving perpendicular to my line of advance) and when I got the Marder out on the flank. We both then used smoke and the "shades" of buildings to limit LOS and break contact and the game settled into something of a mexican standoff. I forged ahead with my T34s in bulk and began to take 2:1 losses as I had to "mob" each of your MK IVs in turn (you will notice that my tanks never once in the game managed to win a straight 1:1 duel. I always needed either a bushwack against your moving vehicles or superior odds in order to win). As the smoke lifted my T70s began to arrive and I succesfully picked off your remaining MK IVs with no loss, either by interdicting their lines of retreat when you tried to redeploy (a sensible move btw. If only you had used smoke to cover it) or by "mobbing" from all angles of the compass (one of the T70s actually coming through here and penetrating with a flank shot). With no forces capable of stopping me left my tanks then turned their attention to your infantry, most of which sensibly withdrew or were rounded up. If you look at the victory points scored through kills (1110 vs. 610) they are not that much seperate, and I believe it that things might actually have been almost even kill-point and numbers wise (you had destroyed 4 T34s and 1 T70 for the loss of 2 MK IVs and 1 Marder) untill I knocked out your last two tanks in quick succession and then went to town on your infantry and halftracks. Things were pretty nailbiting for a few turns when it was 2 T34s and 3 T70s against 2 MK Ivs (not really convincing odds in my book) but I was able to pull through by persevering and leaning a bit on my infantry. The submachinegunners in particular gave good service and supplimented the T34s excellently. I also had a 120mm mortar spotter, but he only fired a single spotting round since the front was never really stationary enough for him to get into play. Your basic plan (lead with dismounts, tanks in a fist behind) was basically sound, but the execution could use some working. One idea is to have the platoon leaders vehicles trail the rest. This both prevents him from being picked off and allows him to fire smoke shells in front of the other tanks or engage infantry, allowing the three others to manuever more freely and use armoured cover arc exclusively (in order to deal with enemy tanks and not get distracted by infantry flitting by). I would also have placed the Marder beside the platoon leader, hanging far enough back to get LOS to the odd target, but not presenting too much of itself in the proces (it has limited ammunition anyway, but can kill whatever it hits). The goal here is to hit one section of the enemy line (say a platoon of T34s) with local odds (4 MK IVs+Marder) and rip them to shreds at a favorable exchange rate (2:1 or better). An alternative here is to leave the Marder back in overwatch with the infantry support weapons (tripod machineguns, FO and mortar), using it´s HE shells against buildings and letting the soviet tanks come to it (preferably buttoned). As it was, the marder was simply lost without taking anything with it. Something you could ill afford. Your artillery was also a little weak, but that is probably because the front began to move just as your FO was getting into play. The 150mm spotter is exceedingly powerful and more than capable of wrecking a full squad with a single flight of shells. You also lost an entire machinegun team when their halftrack went up in flames. Even thoug the halftrack is armoured it is still best used as a "taxi" that can hang a little bit closer to the frontlines than a soft truck can. You can always bring up the halftracks in order to use their machineguns when the enemy anti-armour threat has been neutered. You also sensibly used your very responsive veteran infantry to change positions often in order to avoid the problem of T34s blasting apart the buildings they were hiding in. I would say you had a pretty good overall plan, but as it was, it was mostly the small stuff that prevented you from winning this one, but when you are commanding a very small high quality battlegoup there is precious little room for error. Unfortunately you lost just a few too many units to these small errors to be able to pull through.
His comments:
I had put the Marder out on the flank as sort of a trip wire to guard that area in case you tried a wide swing around. He had a good position but I got impatient with all those T-34's moving on the village and broke cover too soon trying to get a flank shot or two on them and then the T-70's showed up. I really had screwed up on the initial positioning and got the halftracks caught up in traffic and that is why they were so late getting to the party. I needed the housing to be a little more dense to provide me some more cover as your mob tactics worked though I noticed that is was usually a tank from the opposite of the village who killed a tank.

Yeah the AI doesn't know how to use mounted troops at all. Wasn't thinking of an AI only fight, but a version for that makes some sense.
Only thing that surprises me in your AAR is the statement in passing that 3 T-34s and a T-70 coming around a flank, were all stopped by one Marder. Normally those would qualify as rather good odds, enough even for the AI. Did you Marder just get hot, or did they come in one at a time, or ?

Great fun this one. Got a major victory as Germans vs AI.
Decided to sieze some ground and hold it in ambush as visibility low. Everyone raced for the village and set up an infantry and MG screen through the middle of the village with the tanks at the rear of the village and the Marder watching the left flank.
Russian tanks and infantry appeared through the mist into the village to attack the infantry. This gave me plenty of sight on them for the tanks to engage. As the Russians crept forward into view they were dispatched by the panzers. One T-34 managed to have a duel from behind a house and killed a PzIv but was killed by the next in line. One poor T-70 hiding behind a house was shot at from one side, scuttled to the other side, was shot at by someone else and went back and forth several times before running out of luck.
3 T-34 and a T-70 tried a flank attack but the Marder stopped them. Infantry wiped out by Panzers once their armour was gone. Lost 1 PzIv and a HT.
One problem with the set up was that I found 2 76mm ZIS-3 and best part of 2 platoons and an MG still in lorries in the corner. Perhaps a separate AI version could have these out of the lorries and further forward so at least they come into action.
cheers

I did not mean to imply Bannon's tanks didn't ever miss, one Pz4 on turn 5 missed 4 times and died because of it. The Mauder missed his first shot on the T-70 and also died. There were at least 6 other misses by the German tanks shooting at my tanks during the game. However his tanks did have several first shot kills as would be expected of Veterans with ranges under 250m, and the two first shot kills on turn 14 was some nice shooting. My main point was that Bannon played about as well as anybody could and only came away with a tie. The Russians have a slight advantage on this scenario.
Also wanted to add that one of the nice things about this game was the combined arms force structure. Tanks, infantry, MG, ATG, mortars, and off board arty. The addition of a 50mm ATG for the German's would add interest and could be used to prevent a cheap occupation of the flag near the German deployment area.

Good blow by blow by VS. I laughed when he mentioned my Pzr IVs seemed to always hit with the first shot. If only I was so lucky. It was usually the third shot that hit and I was cursing my vets for being such lousy shots.
This was a good short sharp fight. I did have the better equipment but felt it difficult to advance once the battle was underway. Lots of Russians out there. No sense exposing myself until I had dealt with the tanks. That was the first order of battle. I have armor cover arcs on most of the battle and it came in very close. Had I won the armor battle I would have been free to scatter the infantry at will. The Russian force is more manueverable by virtue of having more mobile units. VS's flanking attack caught me off guard. Once the Mauder was gone the last T-70 rule the field.
Got lucky with my arty. And lucky with the Russian too. His arty was dead on target but caused little damage. Fun running the HT through town with the T-70 on my ass, through my own barrage and a horde of Russian infantry. As I mentioned... it seemed like my best escape. And it was.
Germans could use some more infantry... half a platoon maybe. Something to counter the T-70s would be nice... an early model Pzr III or even a support HT.

This scenario was my first PBEM and is one of the best I have ever played. I rushed a platoon of infantry and a 76mm anti-tank gun forward to the trees beside the road on the Soviet's right flank along with two T-70's. Another platoon and ATG secured the small hill and flag on the north side of the map while two T-70's worked there way along the north edge and turned south on the left flank to capture the flag near the German deployment area. All the T-34's and the SMG riders rushed forward to secure the center village and the two flags. Unfortunately the 120mm spotter had to walk to the battle because he would not embark (game fault). First blood went to Bannon on turn 4 when his tanks appeared at the crossroad and between the central village and the crossroads. I returned the favor by destroying one of his Pz4's near the crossroads house on turn 5 and my two T-70's got a turret penetration on the a PZ4 on the other side of the crossroads house, although I would latter discover this did no damage. Unfortunately for the Russians the other Pz4 close to the treed area in front of the central village was miss identified as a Tiger and both T-34's I had rushed forward to shoot it refused to fire at it and retreated behind a house. Turn 6 saw 4 T-34's rush forward to take out his "Tiger" and all 4 retreated without firing a shot. This turn also saw the start of his highly effective 150mm arty barrage. Turn 7 was a bad one for the Russians. I brought my 76mm gun forward along with the two light tanks to finish off the "wounded" PZ4 between the crossroads and the crossroad house. The ATG and jeep were destroyed with one shot from his Pz4 even though the gun was dismounted in the trees. Both T-70s died with only 3 more shots. A T-34 was killed by the "Tiger" while reversing and another T-34 was disabled by a 150mm arty shell. Half my T-34's, T-70's, and ATG now gone. Turn 8 sees another T-34 immobilized by arty and then killed by his "Tiger", but at least he got off two shots (both missed) at the "Tiger" before he died. On the plus side my T-34 on the right side of the central village kills his Pz4 by the crossroads house (he was shooting a T-70 he didn't know was dead yet). I am now down to two T-34's and two T-70's, my infantry control the central village, the hill near my deployment area, the trees near the crossroads, and I have two T-70s approaching the flag near his deployment area. However, he has two Pz4's, a Mauder and two half-tracks left. I've got a superior position but he has superior force. Also of note on this turn a 150mm shell lands 80 meters from my 120 arty spotter and panics him. He will crawl around until exhausted and be useless for the next several turns. Turn 9 will see a trap laid for his "Tiger" work. I reverse my T-34 in the village beside a house for a side shot and advance my T-34 on the right side of the village toward the crossroads exposing this tanks flank if the "Tiger" will advance. He takes the bait and the "Tiger" dies with one shot to the side armor, since it is really a Pz4, from my village T-34 before he can come into range on the other T-34. Now things are more even. On turn 10 his last Pz4 appears on the left side of the village and starts shooting up my infantry. I don't dare do anything about this till I can get both T-34's together on the left side of the village. The two T-70's abandon the advance on the victory flag and prepare for a flank attack on the Pz4. I also advance the infantry platoon holding the flag near my deployment area toward the central village and leave this flag protected by only the 76mm ATG. Finally on turn 14 all is ready. Both T-34's advance for a frontal shot and both T-70's close in for the flank. Just as the turn starts he destroys a building which blocks the line of sight for one of the advancing T-34's. The other T-34 and both T-70s advance and start shooting. The T-34 misses and dies with two hits from the Pz4, the T-70s keep shooting and achieve one ineffective hit, but do distract the Pz4. My last T-34 advances and destroys the Pz4, but is destroyed in the last seconds of the turn by the Mauder which makes his first appearance in a timely manner. Not a single miss by the Pz4 or Mauder, damn I wish my Russians would shoot like that. Turn 15 sees both T-70s rush forward for side shots on his Mauder. The Mauder continues to shoot at the T-34 because he doesn't know it is dead yet. One of the T-70s bogs about 5 meters before the Mauder comes into sight and the other gets off 2 misses before the Mauder backs out of sight. If it were not for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all. The next turn sees the Mauder kill the T-70 and the other T-70 unbog and head for the flag near his deployment area. I figured this would force his Mauder to come kill the T-70 and keep it from killing my infantry in the village. On turn 20 his half-tracks start shooting up my infantry in the trees near the crossroads. The antitank rifle gets a couple hits but achieves nothing. I'm pretty sure he has infantry in the house by the crossroads so I start pounding the house with 82mm mortar fire. My 120mm arty finally starts to fall around turn 22 into the trees in front of the village. Turn 22 sees his half-tracks tear up an infantry squad trying to sneak up on the crossroads house. My 82mm had smoke rounds and I could have used them, but didn't think of it till after I mailed the turn. The antitank rifle continues to fire to no effect on the half-tracks. Turn 24 sees my luck change. The Mauder finally advances on the T-70, I spot him and miss (of course), he fires and misses (about time), the T-70 fires and punches through the front armor (lucky) and the Mauder burns. Now I should leave the T-70 on the victory flag but those half-tracks are tearing up my infantry in the trees by the crossroads and pissing me off, so high speed through the small village by his deployment area and down the road to get the half-tracks. One half-track dies on turn 27 but the other one goes high speed though the crossroads being fired on by two antitank rifles (no hits) and drives right through the center village while being fired on by all my infantry during a German 150mm arty barrage, unbelievable! My T-70 finally catches him on turn 29 and puts 4 tank rounds into him without effect so that at the end of the game his half-track is still alive. My infantry in the trees by the crossroads advances forward to take the house by the crossroads, but 4 Germans left alive in the ruins of the house cause this victory flag to go to neither side. A German tank crew secures the victory flag vacated by my T-70. Net result, 1 German flag, 1 disputed, and 3 Russian. What a game! Improvements: despite the tie score I think the Russians have a slight advantage. You could give the Germans some more infantry and perhaps a Pz2. A couple LMG to ride on the Russians tanks with the SMG squads would help balance this. Making the Russian tank platoon leaders Veterans and giving them a few veteran infantry units would also add some flavor to the scenario. However, part of the fun of this scenario is the small number of units involved and any change would have to be play tested to insure the balance you now have is not destroyed. A truly great scenario, thanks Von Schwendeman

After a yer of PBEM this was Junk2Drive's and my first CMBB PBEM game. I had lost all my T-34s and had only taken out 1 Pz IV and the Marder and thought I was done for. Then Junk got over confident and advanced with his armor first towards the center of the village where I had the two 76 mm AT guns. They shot much better than my tanks and were able to take out 3 Pz IVs while losing one AT gun. I then had one T-70 left which became king of the battlefield. All in all a good game with many shifts of fortune as you can see.

Early on this seemed unbalanced. The PZs had no problem with the Ts. I lost the Marder before it had a chance to do much. Then I met Mr. ATG and his partner. I took one out but the other got revenge. In the last few turns I had no armour and a few troops. Out of the flank comes a T. My troops were under fire and refused to toss their bundles at it. It roamed around killing and capturing a mortar team.
Had this been a variable ending I would have been wiped out.

Great report, and I am glad you found it so closely balanced.
The 22nd Panzer scenario might need some force reductions on the Russian side for balance, but this one I think is clearly right.

Another good scenario Jason- you have a knack for this!
Much harder fight than against the Rumanians in other scenarios in series (I played Soviet vs AI).
Moved fast at the outset, secured the reverse slop of the hill nearest my set up zone and sent 2 x T70s , a gun and an infantry platoon to secure the crossroads whilst sending in my infantry and the remaining T70s to secure the village,
T34s with riders and remaining gun followed up into the village.
Germans probed in the centre and got a swift bloody nose (Pz IV and halftrack ko'd). Then they launched a sustained attack on the x roads. Threatened to roll up my right flank. Some nailbiting moments as the superior German armour kept rolling - I had a squad in the house by the x roads as a Pz IV drew up next to it, a T70 dashed forward from the scattered trees on my extreme right flank, hoping to get off a close range side shot and at least distract the panzer. The T70 dashes forward, kills a Marder (bonus), the panzer's turret swivels...my guys in the house run out and chuck a couple of perol bombs. Panzer destroys T70, petrol bombs have no effect, panzer calmly reverses, swivels turret...boom...five dead Heros of the Motherland...
And on it went...finished with 1 T34 & 1 T70 still running and a marginal victory.
I reckon if Fritz had had another platoon of infantry I'd have been in real trouble- he could have hit me hard in the village with his landsers and just kept hammering the right flank with his armour.
Thanks again Jason.
