Kampfgruppe Richter in Budel. Dilemma, fight the allies or retreat?
A Very British Civil War
Note: this is clearly a “what-if” scenario, loosely based on the bustling miniatures war gaming off-shoot of the same name. Outstanding work has been done by Solway Crafts and Miniatures, and I credit them with the brilliance of this war gaming theme.
Background
England, May 1938 (designer note: note the in-game calendar notes “1944”; this is only to create the optics of lush green environment of the British Isles)
Weather: overcast, mild, dry
The very social fabric of Great Britain was torn during the apocalypse that was The Great War. The mightiest empire on the globe ended victorious, but at what cost? The rigid social hierarchy was shaken, and the world wide waves of social change did not stop at the English Channel. Class structure, worker’s rights, regional animosities have all brewed in the decades following the Great War. This has all been exacerbated by the crippling economic crisis of the 1930s, to which the ever cautious government responded to by constricting public spending ever more.
In May 1937, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom married Wallis Simpson. The marriage to Wallis was not supported by Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister; and King Edward refused to abdicate. This marriage left the British government, and most of the people, alienated; and public hatred for King Edward and Queen Wallis rose. Parliament was torn, and in the general election of 1937, Baldwin was defeated. The Conservative party, ripped by the issue of King Edward’s marriage, as well as economic and regional tensions, broke apart, and a large segment of the Tory support went to the British Union of Fascists. Oswald Mosley’s promise to ensure public order, and shore up the Empire, resonated with a public tired of public disturbances, strikes in essential services, and the economic malaise. The Labour party too split, with the more radical sections forming their own splinter parties which ran their own candidates. The 1937 election results saw a fractured parliament, and although only winning slightly over 200 seats, and less than 30% of the vote, the BUF formed the largest caucus in the House of Commons. King Edward VIII asked Oswald Mosely to form a government. Mosley did so and almost immediately issued “Orders of Council”, outlawing strikes, restricting collective bargaining, and establishing new offences for unauthorized public gatherings, and publishing “any article intended to alarm the public”. Any opposition was swiftly responded to, if not by the police, then by Mosely’s own BUF Blackshirts, the BUF’s paramilitary wing.
In January 1938, a protest by Dockyard workers in Liverpool was brutally crushed by the BUF and elements of the Regular Army; and violent clashes began across the country; between the Kings troops and those of several other factions. The British Civil War has begun!

Factions: The outbreak of conflict led several groups to attempt to seize the country or their own personal goals. Major factions included:
On the Right (Axis in this scenario
* The Edwardian Army – elements of the professional Army, bound to King Edward VIII.
* The Royal Navy and Royal Marines – bound by tradition and culture to remain loyal to the reigning monarch, and the majority have done so.
* The British Union of Fascists (or “BUF”) – the dominant political party, led by Oswald MOSLEY and heavily backed by German and Italian interests. Mosley has garnered considerable support in his efforts to restore order internally and restore the status of Britain’s Empire
* The Mosley Youth – a “social club” of young men, who have been drilled and armed by unknown sources, and have formed para-military units to push the BUF agenda.
* Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Contingents from other fascist and imperialist sympathizers have been formed. Here we will see the presence of the “Hanoverian Legion”, volunteers from Germany, who are backing the Edwardian and BUF efforts
On the Left (Allied in this scenario)
* The Albertine Army – elements of the regular forces, plus most of the “Territorial Army”, backing the young Prince Albert’s claim to the throne.
* The Anglican League - A large army led by a group of bishops and archbishops, they were aligned with the Albertine Army. Many are veterans of the Great War.
* The People’s Party Army - Made up of disillusioned Labour party supporters, disgruntled workers and Spanish Civil War veterans, they are seeking to turn Britain into a Socialist state based upon Lenin's Russia.
* The Farmer’s Union: radical small plot farmers and farm working hands, seeking better pay, price subsidies, and land redistribution. They are heavily influenced by Marxist doctrine.
* The Student’s Union: like students before and after them, the university students have ramparts to thwart whomever they view as authoritarian,
* Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Groups of Americans, Canadians, and ANZAC units have been formed; here we will see the Lafayette Battalion, formed of French volunteers, many fresh from the savage fighting in Spain.
This scenario occurs in the West Coast port town of Twaddlemore. Twaddlemore is the home base for a small Royal Navy destroyer flotilla, as well as being a mid-sized port for international commerce. Given that the United Kingdom lives or dies based on this freedom to trade overseas, the port is vital to all in this conflict. The Royal Navy, which for the most part has remained loyal to King Edward VIII, dispatched the flotilla two days ago to join the rest of the fleet, tasked with stemming the flow of foreign volunteers coming to fight for their faction of choice. Many of these foreigners have come directly from fighting for the Nationalists or the Republicans in Spain, who have endured two years of their own brutal Civil War already.
Yesterday the dock workers, who are heavily influenced by communist agents and are affiliated with the People’s Party, refused to move armaments stored in the dock warehouses. Instead, they armed themselves and fighting broke out when security staff sought to control the situation. Who opened fire first is both in dispute and a moot point at this juncture. A company of the Army’s Provost Corps was rushed to Twaddlemore by train, but a bomb was used to derail the trail just outside of town. Multiple factions are either in town currently or rumoured to be headed this way. The Telephone Exchange is the key to communicating with the rest of the country, and is clearly a goal to secure. Likewise, the docks and the armaments stored there in are also of immense value. Lastly, the mysterious new Wireless Tower being built on the south shore is of unknown value, as the work crews are from “away” and appear to be quite Teutonic in manner.
This battle will surely prove that the term “Civil War” is clearly a misnomer.
A historically fictional 'what if' look at the events leading up to the Deutsche Afrika Korps capture of Tobruk in June 1942.
SCENARIO DESCRIPTION
A meeting engagement played out in the wooded terrain of the Ardennes at the beginning of the Bulge. 60+ turns.

The Germans are trying to seize important territory: bridges, cross-roads, and towns to allow breakthrough armored thrusts. Central to this map is the village of L’Shone and its surrounding road network.

The Americans are trying to occupy the same terrain to prevent its use by the Germans.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again.
You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case.
Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island.
The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office.
And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about.
The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm.
You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise.
The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job.
You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now.
The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead.
Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre.
The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off.
At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”

In recent weeks, this industrial center has been the scene of increasingly sharp clashes between recon units and regular forces. Both sides have traded jabs over this important airplane fabrication city. Both have moved into the town and then been forced out again. No one seems to be able to hold it. The landing gear assembly plant on the edge of town was occupied by the Red Army a few days ago and then burned and destroyed as the Wehrmacht forced them out. Much of the town lies untouched, but the workers and residents know it is just a matter of time before a major battle rages through the streets of their city…

After another bloody engagement, both sides have backed off. Again, in the still of a Sunday morning under the cover of a pounding rainstorm, both sides push forces forward to gain possession of the city.

No one is sure where the front lines lie. Is the enemy in front of you? Or is he gone?

Push forward, as so many before you have tried, and hold this town once and for all!

The eastern side of the map is mostly woods, the west is hills and farms. It is most suitable for an assault on the town, but if the focus is shifted to the ruined villa it would be good for a meeting engagement.

Looks like your opponent got way over-aggressive with his armor. Pushing it right into the woods like that is suicide, they should use their range, hang back in the open. The tip of the woods makes a better kill zone than deployment area for the Germans...

My opponent had to concede after getting his armor mashed up in the woods. Here is an overhead shot taken at the surrender, around turn 20. I don't think I would have been stopped. I still had all my artillery left and 3 AT guns.

The Soviets finally get TH teams with RPG! Deadly. Very, very deadly. One of mine bagged two PzIV's and I still had a couple left.

The overhead shot shows the lines of advance pretty well. My forces on the central ridge were content to just hold and pin the enemy infantry. My southern troops were going to make the assault. They were opposed by only a single platoon, and I had three platoons and an FT team. I knew he didn't have enough force to stop us both. He would have had to react to the southern force closing on the village, I was then going to unleash the central ridge force forward.

I don't think the marder did anything at all.

Thanks for the report. I'll look into adding some defilade for the German arrivals, that is a good point. I often miss such things in AI testing because it doesn't notice or exploit them.

Played this one H2H as Russians. My biggest problem on the map was where to place my supporting units - guns, MGs, ATRs, mortars, FO. Just in the middle of the game I realized the best place for most of them was the wood on the other side of the stream. My opponent was a little hesitative, so I managed to capture the SW flag without opposition. My opponent occupied the village and southern hill and left the initiative on me. I was slowly atriting his forces with stealthy fire (ATRs, MGs, artillery) but could not get my guns into proper position to hit his tanks, he was very careful with them. I bombed his freshly arrived platoon with 82mm mortars on turn 15 (I think this should be corrected in the scenario design, my first shots landed before those sd.kfz even moved, small crest to limit my LOS should have been there). My opponent then tried to attack the wood north of the village with one platoon, I let infantry to the wood and killed them when they were deep enough so that tanks could not support them. I occupied the flag on the southern hill (only MG, arty observer and SP gun were there) but when I moved my infantry to the forest SW of village my opponent counterattacked with platoon of infantry supported with 3 tanks, which I could not stop. I was avoiding tanks, trying to prepare trap and preparing to attack the village from north. I finally got shots at 2 of his tanks in the village and destroyed them, one with 76mm, one with 45mm. ATRs killed almost all of his halftrucks. The game ended just before I attacked the village.
I beat my opponent, but I think it was mainly because he wasn't too experienced and didn't know how to use his force properly. Overall the scenario was very interesting, I like the asymmetrical choice of forces. The forces are well balanced.

Thanks for the report. Sounds close, despite the Russians losing their high cards with little in return.

I am glad the NE road flags proved important to the outcome, that was definitely a design intention. The Russians can get their ridge and the Germans their village, and each has an "entry zone" flag. That leaves the other road flank, unless either side can pull something unusually decisive to take the other side's "base".

On item in the Russian OOB that might have been a bit overlooked is those 12.7mm HMGs. You might not realize it, but those are a serious threat to the German vehicles. A 50 cal can hole a Pz IV from side or rear at about 200 yards, with considerably better behind armor effect than an ATR.

Still the main Russian AT weapon is their guns, and losing them should have consequences.

The force inbalance, discounting soft transport (which I always do discount) is intentional, and I don't think it needs redressing. An armor edge and something of a tactically defensive stance (from reaching their objectives at faster, mounted speeds) give the Germans strengths beyond the point count.

As for the remark about the Russians not getting enough armor and it reflecting pro German anything, hardly. (Try the next if you doubt it). But I don't give out vanilla forces in every scenario - Russian rifle has to fight with men and guns, Russian mech gets plenty of armor. Tactical variety across scenarios is more interesting anyway.

There is another factor in this scenario and set, however. The Russians did considerably better over the whole offensive with their rifle forces, especially 3rd Guards Army from the north, than from their big mech formations. The latter spent most of their time brawling with German mobile reserves. The former oozed through the more forested region from the north face of the Orel salient to its center, and the Germans never had the manpower to stop them.

So, the assymmetry of Russians "owning" woods interiors with their rifle forces, is thematic throughout the whole scenario pack. (But, on the east face, there isn't all that much forest.).

Incidentally, Operation Little Saturn is coming soon...

MY opponent posted a full AAR with pictures here:

http://www.madcowssteakhouse.com/viewtopic.php?p=266908#266908

Here is his written briefback:

My assessment of the Allies(me):

Infantry: (2 Rifle Coys, full strength)
Performed reasonably well in most circumstances. Multiple SMGs per squad and close quarters fighting in wooded areas (max LOS was ~52m) definitely gave me the advantage in that sense. Concealing them and avoiding enemy armor/vehicles was a priority.

Support: (multiple Maxim MGs, DshK HMGs, 50mm, 82mm mortars)
Did reasonably well, especially when massed in fire. 82mms performed very well, providing suppressive fire and smoke instantaneously. One even scored a 'top penetration' on a PzIV. Biggest difficulty with the support units is deploying them effectively on this map. In order to provide cover for advancing troops, they had to be constantly shifted around to find appropriate LOS, decreasing their overall effectiveness.

Guns: (2 X 76mm, 2 X 45mm) Both 76mms were destroyed during deployment on turn 14 or so. One of the 45mms was killed off by distant mortar fire (went unnoticed for several turns). The lone remaining gun managed to KO one of the PzIVs late in the game...by then it was simply for points, as the game had evolved into a draw.

Armor: NONE (as usual)

Artillery: (76mm FO, 120mm FO) The 120mm performed well by creating destruction and chaos in the village. However, this was relatively fruitless given the failure of my infantry to capitalize on the aftershock of the bombardment. The 76mm managed to fire off about half of its ammo on the NE corner, doing negligible damage to a defending pzgren platoon. However, the unit was suppressed and pinned by area fire from the tanks, and thereby rendered useless after turn 30.

ATRs: (multiple) LOL...they actually accomplished something in this scenario. The scenario designer finally gave them a chance to be useful.

WHAT WORKED WELL:
-Massed infantry assaults in wooded areas.
-Defending from infantry attacks in wooded areas.
-General ability to move troops through wooded areas towards objectives.
-Smoke seemed to be more effective in this scenario as opposed to others, largely because of the terrain.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK:
-Obviously, trying to deploy my AT guns too close to the front. They were easily picked off and wasted by distant support units. Blah!
-My planned assault on the village failed because it was pre-empted by an enemy infantry attack in the wooded area. My infantry were weakened and not capable of a full-blown assault on the village thereafter. I had to leave them in place to guard against future attacks.
-Moving one platoon along the edge of the map...only to provide minimal harrassment to enemy forces near the village late in the game.
-Arty FOs and support units were constantly being redeployed to maintain suitable LOS.

Played this PBEM against human opponent. Here are my comments to him:

RE: Tactics needed to win and panzers strolling around, more on that below. As for Axis fanboyhood, I am not so sure. Perhaps you recall the first scenario of the pack where 2 german platoons a few machineguns and a blind german shepherd gets the honour of holding off 2 reinforced soviet companies ;-). Regarding tanks, there should be more of those in the next scenarios (remember that tanks, historically, belonged in Tank/Panzer Formations. And the soviets in particular were pretty anal about concentrating theirs). Looking forward to the AAR.

This was not exactly one of my best plays but at least I still scored the most percentage wise, even if I still only managed a Draw. The german player is constricted by his lack of infantry, but his tanks and APCs can rule the open areas. For the soviet player the problem is the opposite. he can dominate the close terrain, but cannot cross the open (at least not if the german armour is anywhere nearby). About half the V flags were in relatively open terrain and about half in what I would call close.

The terrain was very constricted, being dominated by north-south running wooded hills and a N-S running river. The open terrain consisted of a system of valleys with roads formed into the approximate form of an H. Near the "crossbar" of the H was a village (3 V flags) and a crossroad (1 flag). The wooded ridgeline in the center of the map running N-S had 3 V-flags north of the H "crossbar" and 1 Flag south of it. The leftmost of the vertical lines in the H had a road running approx. N-S. with a V-flag at its northern and southern terminus. The rightmost vertical line of the H had another road running n-s next to the river. I thus had 6 v-flags within reasonable striking distance.

The lenght of the game seems OK. It allowed one to fully exploit the terrain dismounted while still leaving you enough time to take objectives.

The correlation of forces pitted a mechanized german force against a bunch of russian infantry in a meeting engagement. The german force was outnumbered in infantry but had an advantage in armor. The german force consisted of 5 AFVs (4 proper tanks and 1 light TD), 4 platoons of infantry (1 mounted in HTs), 1 Hvy ptn (4 MGs, 2 MT), 1x105mm FO and a 75mm gun HT. The soviets had 2 companies of infantry, a Heavy weapons company (8 MGs, 4 MTs, 2 HMGs), an AT Rifle company (13 of the buggers plus a tank killer detail of 3 THs and a pioneer platoon plus LMGs), 4 AT Guns (2 light 45mm and 2 medium 76mm), 2 FOs (1x76mm and 1x120mm).

The soviets thus outnumber the germans 7:4 in infantry (counting the Pioneers as an extra platoon), 10:4 in machineguns and 4:2 in medium mortars (they also have 4 lt. mortars). The numbers are equal with regards to tanks vs. AT guns (4 tanks to 4 guns. The Lt. TD has 15mm of side armor and is thus vulnerable to ATRs at any range from the side) and OB artillery (the germans get only 1 module, but it is more responsive than the soviet ones and can chuck more heavy shells than the soviet 120mm). The soviets also have a swarm of ATRs to keep the german HTs in check. The only area where the germans have a clear advantage is thus in heavy AFVs, where they have 4 tanks to the soviets none. This means that the german player must try to capitalize on this armor advantage by using it to deny open ground to the soviets and cut them off from the v-flags. The soviets are of course trying to do the opposite, namely drawing out the german tanks in order to destroy or render them impotent. When the tanks are gone, the soviets can simply walk all over the rest of the germans by virtue of their superior numbers.

I started the game with one infantry platoon in their transport vehicles and the lt. TD. The rest of the force came onto the board in platoon (+) sized increments with a few turns in between. My initial plan was to take the 6 V-flags within immediate striking distance. I would then settle in and wear your force down a bit before perhaps making a bid for more. I was unwilling to settle for less than 5 V-flags since I figured, that by holding at least 5 flags and destroying more than I lost, would ensure that I could win through attrition. The initial force thus started heading north towards the village and its cluster of 3 V-flags. I sent additional infantry and heavu weapons into the wooded ridgeline southwest of the village since I had identified the high ground here as a piece of key terrain and it contained a v-flag. My first real break of the game then happened. As my heavy weapon section settled in to their positions atop the ridgeline they spied 2 jeeps with guns limbered driving on the ridgeline to the north. A short flurry of MG and mortar fire left you 2 guns and 2 jeeps poorer. By then my infantry and TD had consolidated in the village and the rest of my force had just about showed up. The tanks went nort to the village and then due west towards the crossroads. Together with the heavy weapons on the ridgeline to the south they took a platoon of infantry trying to cross the valley under fire, savaging them in the process. This then took a turn for the worse. The HT mounted platoon with the gun HT in the van was coming up to reinforce the village. After trading off a few shots with soviet infantry at ranges in excess of 500 meters the gun HT was taken out by a single ATR shot! The remaining HTs dismounted their infantry and withdrew behind the buildings, keyholing their LoS. All my forces were now arrayed on the field. The infantry was split approximately 50/50, with 2 platoons plus a hvy. weapon section in the village (including the HTs and TD) with the other 2 platoons and hvy weapon section occupying the central ridgeline southwest of the village and the v-flag both here and near the n-s road to the west. The tanks were near the crossroads. Since everything had run like clockwork so far, I began to get a little frisky. My position on the ridgeline had spotted about a company of infantry disappaearing into the wooded ridge running down the western mapedge, so I figured that the 3 v-flags on the central rdgeline north of the village was up for grabs. I sent in my 2 platoons and soon encountered soviet infantry and mortars in strenght. My men gave as good as they got, but had to disengage due to casualties and pull back south to where the tanks and heavy weapons could again support them. meanwhile soviet heavy artillery was falling on the village, forcing the abandonment of 2 HTs and 2 Trucks. With 6 v-flags now secured and a paucity of battle worthy infantry I then settled in to await whatever scheme you had in mind to wrest them away from me. I didn´t have to wait long as the company I had earlier observed i infiltrating the ridgeline near the western mapedge suddenlly appeared out of the forest near the V-flag on the N-S running road to the west. They engaged my two platoons there in an uneven firefight, shattering and destroying one of them and one soviet platoon proceeded to cross the road and disappear into the wooded ridgeline in the center. My armor and FO then interdicted and, forcing the remaining soviets back in to cover but still leaving the V-flag in soviet hands. Meanwhile another platoon of infiltrators appeared east of the river, threatening the village. I hurriedly sent one of the tanks over there to deal with this incursion. A 45mm gun then opened up on the tanks covering the soviet break.in in the west, hitting one in the rear of the turret and disabling the gun. Mortar fire soon took it out though. My only remaining infantry platoon in the area then counterattacked the soviet incursion inside the forest on the central ridgeline, driving them back in disarray. I then sent a tank back towards the crossroads to secure the V-flag there, but it came a bit too close to the crest and ran afoul of a 45mm gun 500 meters away, which took it out with a flurry of tungsten shots to the turret(!). The crew still managed to crawl out of the wreck to secure the flag. Soviet infantry then tried a desperate last minute bid to contest some of the flags, but were driven back in disarray. The game then ended.

Overall I think I did reasonably well given the hand I had to play. Even though my infantry got cut in half they still managed to give as good as they got and the tanks served to drive the casualty exchange firmly in my favor. I was still being a bit too frisky though, probing with infantry where I should just have stood still. near the end of the game I also had to send my tanks around the map singly in penny packets in order to shut down soviet infiltrations as they manifested themselves. This left them vulnerable to enemy action from hidden AT guns. Still, with the threat of soviet overruns being present needs must.... If only I hadn´t lost that tank I might actually have won ;-)

As for you, a bit more humility during the early parts of the game would have been the ticket. I was able to savage 2 irreplacable 76mm AT guns and an entire infantry platoon traipsing around on a bare ridgeline at no loss to myself. What you should have done t

AAR

Forced a surrender on turn 39.

It was a fun battle against the AI. Until all the enemy armor is KO'ed you don't have real freedom to attack the village.

First contact was made around turn 9, when a point AT rifle team spotted armor moving in the village.

A company went up the center and a company went up the right flank.

It is especially fun to be able to play with all your support weapons. The AT rifles kept the armor buttoned up and caused some ventilation holes in several vehicles.

Probably one thing that hurt the AI a little was that any reinforcements that arrived mounted in their transports, stayed that way, unitl the mortars popped them out.

The AI used it's 105 FO towards the end, just a couple minutes to late, as the inf had just started their attack into the village, thus escaping most of the shells. The smoke that I used to cover the attack, broke his LOS after about three minutes as well. Still he got 30 casualties, but it could have been alot worse, if the attack had been just a little later. That could have happened, if the AT gun hadn't taken out his last two tanks when it did, and the inf would still have been waiting in the jump off zone.

H2H should be interesting, as the tanks would be harder to KO, I'd think. Just depends on how they are used.

I wondered if it should have been played as axis, but I don't know how well the AI would handle the AT guns. It did an ok job with the tanks and halftracks. It didn't dismount the reinforcements. Playing as axis, I'd think it would be a turkey shoot as the AI would have rushed it's inf to the village, and you could have set there and picked them off as they came out of the woods.
