Kampfgruppe Richter in Budel. Dilemma, fight the allies or retreat?
A Very British Civil War
Note: this is clearly a “what-if” scenario, loosely based on the bustling miniatures war gaming off-shoot of the same name. Outstanding work has been done by Solway Crafts and Miniatures, and I credit them with the brilliance of this war gaming theme.
Background
England, May 1938 (designer note: note the in-game calendar notes “1944”; this is only to create the optics of lush green environment of the British Isles)
Weather: overcast, mild, dry
The very social fabric of Great Britain was torn during the apocalypse that was The Great War. The mightiest empire on the globe ended victorious, but at what cost? The rigid social hierarchy was shaken, and the world wide waves of social change did not stop at the English Channel. Class structure, worker’s rights, regional animosities have all brewed in the decades following the Great War. This has all been exacerbated by the crippling economic crisis of the 1930s, to which the ever cautious government responded to by constricting public spending ever more.
In May 1937, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom married Wallis Simpson. The marriage to Wallis was not supported by Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister; and King Edward refused to abdicate. This marriage left the British government, and most of the people, alienated; and public hatred for King Edward and Queen Wallis rose. Parliament was torn, and in the general election of 1937, Baldwin was defeated. The Conservative party, ripped by the issue of King Edward’s marriage, as well as economic and regional tensions, broke apart, and a large segment of the Tory support went to the British Union of Fascists. Oswald Mosley’s promise to ensure public order, and shore up the Empire, resonated with a public tired of public disturbances, strikes in essential services, and the economic malaise. The Labour party too split, with the more radical sections forming their own splinter parties which ran their own candidates. The 1937 election results saw a fractured parliament, and although only winning slightly over 200 seats, and less than 30% of the vote, the BUF formed the largest caucus in the House of Commons. King Edward VIII asked Oswald Mosely to form a government. Mosley did so and almost immediately issued “Orders of Council”, outlawing strikes, restricting collective bargaining, and establishing new offences for unauthorized public gatherings, and publishing “any article intended to alarm the public”. Any opposition was swiftly responded to, if not by the police, then by Mosely’s own BUF Blackshirts, the BUF’s paramilitary wing.
In January 1938, a protest by Dockyard workers in Liverpool was brutally crushed by the BUF and elements of the Regular Army; and violent clashes began across the country; between the Kings troops and those of several other factions. The British Civil War has begun!

Factions: The outbreak of conflict led several groups to attempt to seize the country or their own personal goals. Major factions included:
On the Right (Axis in this scenario
* The Edwardian Army – elements of the professional Army, bound to King Edward VIII.
* The Royal Navy and Royal Marines – bound by tradition and culture to remain loyal to the reigning monarch, and the majority have done so.
* The British Union of Fascists (or “BUF”) – the dominant political party, led by Oswald MOSLEY and heavily backed by German and Italian interests. Mosley has garnered considerable support in his efforts to restore order internally and restore the status of Britain’s Empire
* The Mosley Youth – a “social club” of young men, who have been drilled and armed by unknown sources, and have formed para-military units to push the BUF agenda.
* Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Contingents from other fascist and imperialist sympathizers have been formed. Here we will see the presence of the “Hanoverian Legion”, volunteers from Germany, who are backing the Edwardian and BUF efforts
On the Left (Allied in this scenario)
* The Albertine Army – elements of the regular forces, plus most of the “Territorial Army”, backing the young Prince Albert’s claim to the throne.
* The Anglican League - A large army led by a group of bishops and archbishops, they were aligned with the Albertine Army. Many are veterans of the Great War.
* The People’s Party Army - Made up of disillusioned Labour party supporters, disgruntled workers and Spanish Civil War veterans, they are seeking to turn Britain into a Socialist state based upon Lenin's Russia.
* The Farmer’s Union: radical small plot farmers and farm working hands, seeking better pay, price subsidies, and land redistribution. They are heavily influenced by Marxist doctrine.
* The Student’s Union: like students before and after them, the university students have ramparts to thwart whomever they view as authoritarian,
* Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Groups of Americans, Canadians, and ANZAC units have been formed; here we will see the Lafayette Battalion, formed of French volunteers, many fresh from the savage fighting in Spain.
This scenario occurs in the West Coast port town of Twaddlemore. Twaddlemore is the home base for a small Royal Navy destroyer flotilla, as well as being a mid-sized port for international commerce. Given that the United Kingdom lives or dies based on this freedom to trade overseas, the port is vital to all in this conflict. The Royal Navy, which for the most part has remained loyal to King Edward VIII, dispatched the flotilla two days ago to join the rest of the fleet, tasked with stemming the flow of foreign volunteers coming to fight for their faction of choice. Many of these foreigners have come directly from fighting for the Nationalists or the Republicans in Spain, who have endured two years of their own brutal Civil War already.
Yesterday the dock workers, who are heavily influenced by communist agents and are affiliated with the People’s Party, refused to move armaments stored in the dock warehouses. Instead, they armed themselves and fighting broke out when security staff sought to control the situation. Who opened fire first is both in dispute and a moot point at this juncture. A company of the Army’s Provost Corps was rushed to Twaddlemore by train, but a bomb was used to derail the trail just outside of town. Multiple factions are either in town currently or rumoured to be headed this way. The Telephone Exchange is the key to communicating with the rest of the country, and is clearly a goal to secure. Likewise, the docks and the armaments stored there in are also of immense value. Lastly, the mysterious new Wireless Tower being built on the south shore is of unknown value, as the work crews are from “away” and appear to be quite Teutonic in manner.
This battle will surely prove that the term “Civil War” is clearly a misnomer.
A historically fictional 'what if' look at the events leading up to the Deutsche Afrika Korps capture of Tobruk in June 1942.
SCENARIO DESCRIPTION
A meeting engagement played out in the wooded terrain of the Ardennes at the beginning of the Bulge. 60+ turns.

The Germans are trying to seize important territory: bridges, cross-roads, and towns to allow breakthrough armored thrusts. Central to this map is the village of L’Shone and its surrounding road network.

The Americans are trying to occupy the same terrain to prevent its use by the Germans.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again.
You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case.
Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island.
The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office.
And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about.
The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm.
You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise.
The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job.
You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now.
The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead.
Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre.
The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off.
At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”

In recent weeks, this industrial center has been the scene of increasingly sharp clashes between recon units and regular forces. Both sides have traded jabs over this important airplane fabrication city. Both have moved into the town and then been forced out again. No one seems to be able to hold it. The landing gear assembly plant on the edge of town was occupied by the Red Army a few days ago and then burned and destroyed as the Wehrmacht forced them out. Much of the town lies untouched, but the workers and residents know it is just a matter of time before a major battle rages through the streets of their city…

After another bloody engagement, both sides have backed off. Again, in the still of a Sunday morning under the cover of a pounding rainstorm, both sides push forces forward to gain possession of the city.

No one is sure where the front lines lie. Is the enemy in front of you? Or is he gone?

Push forward, as so many before you have tried, and hold this town once and for all!

The eastern side of the map is mostly woods, the west is hills and farms. It is most suitable for an assault on the town, but if the focus is shifted to the ruined villa it would be good for a meeting engagement.

Sounds reasonable. I don´t really think rasing the quality of the MG42s will mean much. If they deploy so they can shoot out from the control tower the T34s will nail them and the SMG infantry has fire superiority over them if they skulk inside the building. Giving the german player some small leeway as to his perimeter forces is also a good idea and means that they might get the chance to play a larger role.

But in my view the battle really boils down to how the german player uses his reinforcements (and how soon he can do so) since so much of the german armor killing potential is tied up in this reinforcement slot. If they arrive late they will likely not make much of an impression, but if they arrive early the StuG can potentially turn the battle almost on its own by shooting up as many T34s as it can. Raising the chance of their arrival to 50% still leaves the risk that they show up late (or not at all if the german player gets very unlucky). It is after all a mere coin toss.

Thanks for the report.

On the balance issues, I think the scenario is considerably harder for a less experienced Russian commander than you seem to suppose. It takes guts to recon aggressively but correctly into an unknown town with 200 meter visibility, on a short clock.

I would consider the following balance changes however, given your report -

(1) dig in the two 88 FLAK.

(2) raise the HMG-42 teams at the tower to regular and start them unpinned. Improve the company HQ with them a bit as well, and perhaps add a regular rifle squad to help make the fight for that building a bit harder in pure infantry terms.

(3) raise the German reinforcement arrival chance to 50%. (They are meant to arrive *after* the Russians have taken nearly everything, but stress how well the Russians are prepared to fight to keep it afterward).

I might also consider freeing the set-up areas for the 20mm FLAK battery, not to "anywhere" but more liberally than they are in the present version. This would let the German player plan his defense more actively. I have resisted this because the theme of the whole affair is surprise, but if restricted to just those 6 units (4 20mm FLAK and 2 tank hunters) it might let the German player show his defensive ingenuity without compromising that basic theme.

Comments on these balance ideas would be welcome.

And here is my comment:

That certainly went better than expected. I mean that in the sense that I had expected to win, yes, but not this big ;-)

The overall theme here is of course the famous soviet raid on the airfield at Tatsinskaya which made any further attempts at resupplying the Stalingrad cauldron moot. The soviets must quickly overwhelm and seize the base before a coherent defense can be mustered by attacking from radically different directions with powerful and seasoned mechanized forces. The germans are of course trying to prevent this, but has to do this with forces that are mostly Green. On the plus side they have the chance of receiving powerful reinforcements later. Even if the reinforcements arrive early the germans definetely have their job cut out for them more so if the reinforcements choose not to show up at all! I have some suggestions that might serve to rectify this and make it somewhat more manageable for the germans to win.

The map was also straightforward. The northern half was dominated by the runways of the airfield plus a perimeter fence. Immediately to the south hereoff ran a line of 4 hangars (each w. a small V-flag) from the western table edge to the center of the table, where the control tower was located (w. a big V-flag). To the east hereoff was two more Hangars (each w. a small V-flag). To the south of this line of buildings ran a number of smaller buildings in a chess-board pattern w. a railway line running E-W a little further to the south. In the SE corner was a large warehouse (w. a large V-flag) and running W-E along the southern table edge was a number of dwellings interspered with roads. The visibilty was somewhat hampered by dawn fog and only 200 meters which meant, that there was plenty of opportunity for sneaking about in the fog!

The number of turns (20) basically seems allright and means, that the soviet player has to hurry in order to get to the objectives on time. Any drawn out effective resistance on behalf of the germans will very likely prove fatal to the soviet chances of winning.

The correlation of forces in points termas was defintetely in favor of the soviets (1575 vs. 1200) even when points for soft transport had been deducted (1305 vs. 918). Close to 3:2 odds in other words, which is what the soviets need in order to even be able to attack in the first place.

Most of the soviet forces started the game off-board and only entered at the start of turn 2, with some more showing up during turns 3 and 4. About half of them entered play in the NE corner of the map and the other half in the SW corner. The soviets started the game w. a single Veteran BA 64 and a Green 132mm Rocket Spotter in the NE corner of the map. On turn 2 a T34 platoon of 3 tanks (HQ Vet, 2xReg) w. a veteran platoon of SMG riders (2 squads, above average HQ) and a Veteran DP LMG shows up accompanied by a Veteran Recon Platoon (below average HQ, 2 sqauds, 5 jeeps). On turn 3 this is followed up by another T34 (vet) with a Vet Company HQ (average bonuses) and an Elite Sniper riding along. In the SW corner of the map another Vet Recon platoon (as above, but w. an HQ w. average bonuses) shows up accompanied by 2xBA 64 Armored cars (also veteran). On turn 4 these are reinforced by a T34 platoon of 3 tanks (HQ Vet, 2 others Regular) plus a platoon of Veteran SMG Riders (2 Squads, HQ w. above average bonuses) plus a Vet DP LMG. The soviet player thus has two company sized combined arms groupings showing up at directly opposite points of the map and can thus catch the german defender in a pincer movement. The soviet force as such has the appearance of a small battalion sized mechanized battlegroup (SMG Coy(-), Recon Coy(-) and T34 Coy(-)) where every part complements each other. In addition nearly all of his troops are Veteran quality or better with reasonable leaders.

The germans for their part were padlocked into a given setup and most of the german force started the game in some kind of discomfort ranging from "Cautious" to "Pinned". Along the perimeter fence two 20mm AA batteries of 2x Guns (Green) and a TH team (Reg) each was stationed. One battery was facing north and the other facing west. Scattered across the runway and in front of the hangars were 10 trucks of Conscript quality (likely representing maintanence trucks, fuel bowsers and suchlike, if not the actual planes themselves). In the row of hangars to the west of the control tower a Green Infantry platoon w. 2 squads and an average HQ was stationed. In the controltower itself the Coy HQ (Regular, average bonuses) plus two Green MG42s was stationed, and in the open ground to the east hereof two Regular 88mm AA guns plus a Regular HQ (w. average bonuses) was stationed overlooking the eastern parts of the runway. In the hangars to the east of these was another small Green Infantry platoon (2 squads, average HQ). In the Warehouse SE corner another infantry platoon was stationed (3 green squads, 1 regular HQ w. average bonuses and handheld AT devices) and on the concrete square to the west of the warehouse a Regular Marde, 2xRegular SDKFZ 223 MG armed armored cars, a Regular SDKFZ 6/2 37mm SPAA halftrack plus 2xSDKFZ 7 (Regular) prime movers were placed. In addition the germans had a 30% chance pr. turn from turn 15 onwards to receive a veteran platoons of Jägers (2 squads, above average HQ), a Crack TH team plus a Veteran StuG IIIF w. 80mm front armor as reinforcements entering the board from the center of the southern table edge. The german force is thus somewhat of a hodge-podge with little real structure and somewhat lacking in quality.

The overall correlation of forces is actually one of parity with regard to infantry (both sides have 4 platoons if the german reinforcements are counted in), but the soviets have an overall quality edge. The germans have more and better MGs (2xtripod mounted stabilized MG42s vs. 2 bipod mounted non-stabilized DP LMGs) but they are also Green while the soviets are of course veterans. In addition the germans have 4 Green 20mm AA guns, which work well against infantry and light armor and might possibly wreck a T34 through concentrated "Hail-fire" if they get lucky. The soviet player is the only to have any artillery, a solitary Green 132mm Rocket Spotter obviously meant to be fired as prep-fire. In the armor and AT gun department the germans started w. 2x88mm Guns plus a single Marder vs. 7xT34s (albeit without radios, so harder to coordinate). Later they might get a single StuG IIIF, which is invulnerable from the front. In addition the germans also have 3xTH and some of their infantry are sporting short range AT devices. The odds are clearly in the soviets favor here, but not insurmountable. If the german player can just manage to knock out 2-3 T34s with his initial AT assets the StuG IIIF stands a reasonable chance of wiping out the remaining T34s by virtue of its invulnerability or forcing them to skulk away out of sight (provided that it arrives in a timely manner of course). Both sides also have some light armor hanging around which is mostly good against infantry. The soviets had 3xBA64s and the germans had 2xSDKFZ 223. The germans also had a single 37mm armed AA halftrack, which can kill the soviet BA 64s and potentially wreck a T34 if it gets very, very lucky. The germans thus have a small plus in this category. It is thus clear that the game will be decided by how well the soviet player utilize his T34s. If many of them end up wrecked early the german player will have a much bigger chance of winning. In addition the soviet player has a very notable quality advantage over the germans, particularly in infantry. Green infantry is just so much more hard pressed to match veteran than vice versa ;-)

As the soviet player I didn´t really have a lot to choose about how to set up my two starting units, so I started the game. Turn 1 I sent the BA 64 scouting forwards and fired off the 132mm Rocket FO centered on a point about 100 meters south of the control tower (as I was later to find out the barrage killed a few infantry and a couple of trucks but more crucially offed an 88!). On turn 2 a bunch of reinforcements arrived in the NE and (much to my surprise) SW corner of the map. I sent the T34s and riders plus the Recon Plt. in the NE corner south, advancing parallel to the table edge, aiming for the eastmost hangars. On the way they killed off a truck and apparently narrowly missed straying into the LoS of the northernmost 20mm AA battery. The forces arriving in the SW corner of the map (recon Plt. plus 2xBA64s) were sent advancing due east, with the Recon Plt planning to peel off to the north and scout out the 4 hangars to the west of the control tower. Next turn another T34 arrived in the NE corner and was sent after the other forces. And on turn 4 another T34 platoon w. riders arrived in the SW corner and was sent advancing due west following the BA 64s. Things then started developing.

The battle then developed into two distinct struggles for each of the battlegroups. The one advancing from the NE got to the outskirts of the airfield with no resistance (apart from the aforementioned truck). Overwatched by the T34s a single recon ½squad was sent forwards in a jeep to check out the easternmost hangars. He entered the nearest one unooposed and the rest of the platoon began to follow. Then all hell broke loose. The german platoon here, either by virtue of them withholding their fire deliberately or by recovering from their pinned status opened up on the Recon Guys. The result was somewhat meagre though: they managed to gut a single jeep and decimate the squad riding it, but under the covering fire of the T34s the remaining soldiers of the recon Plt. assisted by the SMG riders evicted the german platoon, killing or routing its members. The T34s then started sweeping into the gap between the control tower and the easternmost hangars with the SMG riders following. Here they encontered the remaining 88 plus one of the SDKFZ 7 prime movers. The 88 get off a couple of shots but was quickly dispatched since it was sitting in the open without any cover. The SDKFZ soon went the same way. The T34 then covered the move of the SMG platoon plus half of the recon platoon (under command of the Coy HQ) towards the control tower. The remaiander of the Recon platoon either guarded conquered objectives due to being shot up or continued south towards the warehouse, chasing the remnants of the german platoon that had held the easternmost hangars off the board in the process. I cautiosuly sent a single halfsquad into a corner of the controltower, quickly followed by the rest of the squad since there was no resistance. Both machineguns and the Coy HQ then opened up on this squad, which got decimated over a few turns. But the T34s and the rest of the accompanying infantry soon silenced them. The remnants of the MG42 squads were taken prisoner. One of the T34s and the BA 64 then peeled off in order to isolate the Warehouse from the north and over its eastern side by fire. The other two T34s plus the parts of the Recon plt. commanded by the Coy HQ 8and the DP LMG and the Sniper) moved further west to help with the fight at the hangars over there. The SMG platoon stayed put to hold the control tower (they had taken casualties and had spent their ammo).

The recon Plt. that arrived in the SW corner on turn 2 moved slightly to the east and then peeled off north towards the 4 hangars. They dismounted short of the objectives and begun scouting out the area on foot. Meanwhile the two BA 64s continued to scout the route towards eastwards. They quickly bumped into a german AC, which they identified as armed with a 20mm gun (it wasn´t but I didn´t know that at the time), which hurriedly led them to break contact and withdraw behind the nearest buildings. Meanwhile the T34 platoon w. Riders had showed up in the SW corner and began advancing east in order to sort out the offending AC (they never managed to find it though). The 2xBA 64s advanced slightly north and covered the empty spot between the recon platoon and the T34s by surveillance. This part of the battle also evolved into two distinct theatres: The Recon platoon advancing north towards the hangars and the T34s advancing east towards the warehouse. The recon platoon began to scout out the hangars and soon encounterted the german platoon there. Both sides then settled in and began trading shots, the recon platoon gradually gaining the upper hand due to superior quality and leadership. Equilibrium was restored by a german armored car showing up from the west (don´t know how he managed to get himself maneuvered out there without being discovered) firing into the flank of my platoon and eventually causing almost ½dozen casualties! But the advantage was restored once extra forces arrived from the controltower and started rolling up the german position from east to west, killing the german holdouts as they went. As I began occupying the hangars a 20mm AA gun on the runway (obviously pushed there by hand) opened up but concentrated fire caused its abandonment and a T34 showing up cause the crew to surrender. I then took all 4 hangars. Meanwhile the T34s w. riders advancing due east came upon a buttoned SP Gun (the Marder as I was later to learn) passed in front of my T34s moving north, obviously intending to engage the other T34s near the controltower. A couple of rounds into his flank and rear quickly caused him to burn :-). The T34s then moved on to the warehouse without meeting further resistance. The SMG riders dismounted and under overwatch from the rest sent forwards a single ½squad which proceeded to occuoy a part of the warehouse. Here they discovered a german squad, within direct fire range of the T34s which was quickly routed and destroyed. The rest of the german units inside the factory then put in a counterattack which routed my ½squad, managing to stay far enough inside the warehouse while doing so, that the T34s couldn´t hit them by direct fire. With the arrival of parts of a Recon plt. plus another T34 coming down from the north I could now box in the Warehouse and by "area firing" at the edge of LoS the T34s managed to "shoot in" the rest of the SMG platoon plus the parts of the Recon plt. coming up from the north. It was then a question of simply rooting out the remaining germans by superior firepower, either killing them outright or driving them fleeing out of the warehouse and into the sights of the waiting T34s. A few men surendered here as well when their escape was cut off. I was in the process of consolidating the objective and policing up the prisoners when suddenly one of the T34s spotted infantry and a solitary piece of armor coming up behind him from the west. He immediately swung the turret around and sent the infantry scurrying w. a few bursts, but just as he drew a bead on the unidentified armored vehicle and buttnoed up to fire he lost the target. Drat! Next turn he unbuttoned, began to rotate and prepared to fire while the remaining vehicles of his platoon began a move to outflank the enemy vehicle. The T34 then (correctly, as I was later to learn) identified the vehicle as a StuG w. 80mm front armor and promptly went into "cower-panic", driving furiously to the east parallel to the southern table edge in order to break contact. The StuG managed to land one shot, which hit him in the tracks and immobilized him just as he broke LoS. The two remaining T34s managed to corrall the StuG behind a house and one of them then moved to outflank and kill it, but promptly ran into the accompanying infantry w. their magnetic mines who proceeded to knock it out. Drat! The game then ended.

I don´t think I really made any serious mistakes apart from possibly allowing german infantry AT to kill a T34 during the last turn. You made some smaller mistakes. One of them was the use of the StuG. That critter is invulnerable from the front and will send the T34s fleeing by merely showing up. It is the next bext thing to a Tiger at this point in time (entirely due to the games overmodelling of layered armor, since IRL the soviet 76mm gun could defeat 80mm of layered armor).

Overall I think this scenario is pretty much tilted in favor of the soviets. Odds are pretty good that the soviet rocket barrage will kill or permanently stun at least one of the german players 3 major AT systems at the start of the game leaving only two left and the soviet player would have to be pretty incompetent to lose many T34s to the remainder. The same essentially goes for the infantry as well. The germans can skulk inside the control tower or the warehouse, but the higher quality and short range firepower of the soviet SMG gunners will likely lead to the soviets eventually prevailing. These objectives can of course be made proof against capture by the early arrival of the german reinforcements, but this is unlikely to happen. A few changes might give the germans a better chance of pulling off a draw if not a win.

-One possible improvement would be to make the chance of the german reinforcements arriving 100%. The german player will thus have 5 turns (25% of the games total lenght) in which to use the potential of the 80mm armored StuG to cause havoc. In the current incarnation of the scenario the reinforcements might not show up at all!

-Another might be to give the german player a 20mm armed AC instead of the two MG armed ones in order to keep the soviet ACs more in check.

-In CMAK they introduced sandbag emplacements as a terrain feature. This isn´t in CMBB but one way to represent gun emplacements might be by placing a stone wall around them or perhaps even giving them a foxhole. It is not much but might help the german 88s (and perhaps also the 20mm AA guns) to ride out the rocket bombardment and the subsequent direct fire better.

-Even if none of the above suggestions are implemented it would probably be a good idea to give the soviets some kind of scenario bonus. 250-300 points perhaps?

Played this PBEM. played it through to its eventual conclusion. here is the comment of my opponent:

Well, I've already bitched enough about my lack of setup option. Your rocket barrage KO'd one of my precious 88s, and 'shocked' the Marder III by killing one of its crew, severely affecting it's visibility and capability.

I had mostly green units spread all over the map. Had no clue as to what direction you would be attacking from. The linear nature of the VLs made it even more difficult to defend with what I had, as you could ritualistically march down the aisle and take each one with armor/infantry combo.

Most of the trucks, 1armored car, and the Sdfkz/7 with 37mm AA were simply exited off the map, as they were relatively worthless against your approaching armor. IMO, saving those units is the only reason my morale didn't break and end the game early. Of 4x 20mm AAs, only one had LOS - and it was destroyed. Sent a truck to move a second one, but the mover was destroyed in the process. Infantry performed poorly as most were green and didnt have a chance against SMG infantry in close-quarters fighting.

I got a StuF and a small platoon of vet infantry on Turn 17 (wtf?), which amazingly managed to immobile one T34 and destroy another via hand-held AT weapons. But that only made a slight dent in your forces, which had already overrun most of the VLs.

In retrospect, there really wasn't much I could do differently. This was probably the most historically accurate scenario played between you and I, but also the most lop-sided in terms of advantage.

To give the Germans a chance at even a stalemate, I'd suggest making all units at least regular, upgrading the Marder to a StuG or PzIV, and adding an extra (reserve) platoon near the center of the map.

HI JasonC
Just finished this one. Excellent fun! Had it all wrapped up by move 14 .......but then lost an Arm car to a flak gun on the edge of the airfield and then in the last three seconds of the game a T-34 which was sitting outside the control Tower.

I was able to drive jeeps and recon teams all over the airfield and got a pretty clear picture of the enemy layout by move 5 while the tanks were taking the Control Tower. So was able to send tanks to where ever needed and so overcame the Germans with minimum effort. So pretty easy really.

Couple of points, I felt my recon knowledge was too good and that you could introduce an element of confusion by having a lot more units with no ammo representing LW ground crew, etc and balance the points by giving the Axis a points bonus.

The StuG comes in a little late and only just made it into the battle by the hangers. Could do with coming in a couple of moves earlier.

Do you need this one played H2H?
cheers
