Kampfgruppe Richter in Budel. Dilemma, fight the allies or retreat?

A Very British Civil War Note: this is clearly a “what-if” scenario, loosely based on the bustling miniatures war gaming off-shoot of the same name. Outstanding work has been done by Solway Crafts and Miniatures, and I credit them with the brilliance of this war gaming theme. Background England, May 1938 (designer note: note the in-game calendar notes “1944”; this is only to create the optics of lush green environment of the British Isles) Weather: overcast, mild, dry The very social fabric of Great Britain was torn during the apocalypse that was The Great War. The mightiest empire on the globe ended victorious, but at what cost? The rigid social hierarchy was shaken, and the world wide waves of social change did not stop at the English Channel. Class structure, worker’s rights, regional animosities have all brewed in the decades following the Great War. This has all been exacerbated by the crippling economic crisis of the 1930s, to which the ever cautious government responded to by constricting public spending ever more. In May 1937, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom married Wallis Simpson. The marriage to Wallis was not supported by Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister; and King Edward refused to abdicate. This marriage left the British government, and most of the people, alienated; and public hatred for King Edward and Queen Wallis rose. Parliament was torn, and in the general election of 1937, Baldwin was defeated. The Conservative party, ripped by the issue of King Edward’s marriage, as well as economic and regional tensions, broke apart, and a large segment of the Tory support went to the British Union of Fascists. Oswald Mosley’s promise to ensure public order, and shore up the Empire, resonated with a public tired of public disturbances, strikes in essential services, and the economic malaise. The Labour party too split, with the more radical sections forming their own splinter parties which ran their own candidates. The 1937 election results saw a fractured parliament, and although only winning slightly over 200 seats, and less than 30% of the vote, the BUF formed the largest caucus in the House of Commons. King Edward VIII asked Oswald Mosely to form a government. Mosley did so and almost immediately issued “Orders of Council”, outlawing strikes, restricting collective bargaining, and establishing new offences for unauthorized public gatherings, and publishing “any article intended to alarm the public”. Any opposition was swiftly responded to, if not by the police, then by Mosely’s own BUF Blackshirts, the BUF’s paramilitary wing. In January 1938, a protest by Dockyard workers in Liverpool was brutally crushed by the BUF and elements of the Regular Army; and violent clashes began across the country; between the Kings troops and those of several other factions. The British Civil War has begun!
Factions: The outbreak of conflict led several groups to attempt to seize the country or their own personal goals. Major factions included: On the Right (Axis in this scenario * The Edwardian Army – elements of the professional Army, bound to King Edward VIII. * The Royal Navy and Royal Marines – bound by tradition and culture to remain loyal to the reigning monarch, and the majority have done so. * The British Union of Fascists (or “BUF”) – the dominant political party, led by Oswald MOSLEY and heavily backed by German and Italian interests. Mosley has garnered considerable support in his efforts to restore order internally and restore the status of Britain’s Empire * The Mosley Youth – a “social club” of young men, who have been drilled and armed by unknown sources, and have formed para-military units to push the BUF agenda. * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Contingents from other fascist and imperialist sympathizers have been formed. Here we will see the presence of the “Hanoverian Legion”, volunteers from Germany, who are backing the Edwardian and BUF efforts On the Left (Allied in this scenario) * The Albertine Army – elements of the regular forces, plus most of the “Territorial Army”, backing the young Prince Albert’s claim to the throne. * The Anglican League - A large army led by a group of bishops and archbishops, they were aligned with the Albertine Army. Many are veterans of the Great War. * The People’s Party Army - Made up of disillusioned Labour party supporters, disgruntled workers and Spanish Civil War veterans, they are seeking to turn Britain into a Socialist state based upon Lenin's Russia. * The Farmer’s Union: radical small plot farmers and farm working hands, seeking better pay, price subsidies, and land redistribution. They are heavily influenced by Marxist doctrine. * The Student’s Union: like students before and after them, the university students have ramparts to thwart whomever they view as authoritarian, * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Groups of Americans, Canadians, and ANZAC units have been formed; here we will see the Lafayette Battalion, formed of French volunteers, many fresh from the savage fighting in Spain. This scenario occurs in the West Coast port town of Twaddlemore. Twaddlemore is the home base for a small Royal Navy destroyer flotilla, as well as being a mid-sized port for international commerce. Given that the United Kingdom lives or dies based on this freedom to trade overseas, the port is vital to all in this conflict. The Royal Navy, which for the most part has remained loyal to King Edward VIII, dispatched the flotilla two days ago to join the rest of the fleet, tasked with stemming the flow of foreign volunteers coming to fight for their faction of choice. Many of these foreigners have come directly from fighting for the Nationalists or the Republicans in Spain, who have endured two years of their own brutal Civil War already. Yesterday the dock workers, who are heavily influenced by communist agents and are affiliated with the People’s Party, refused to move armaments stored in the dock warehouses. Instead, they armed themselves and fighting broke out when security staff sought to control the situation. Who opened fire first is both in dispute and a moot point at this juncture. A company of the Army’s Provost Corps was rushed to Twaddlemore by train, but a bomb was used to derail the trail just outside of town. Multiple factions are either in town currently or rumoured to be headed this way. The Telephone Exchange is the key to communicating with the rest of the country, and is clearly a goal to secure. Likewise, the docks and the armaments stored there in are also of immense value. Lastly, the mysterious new Wireless Tower being built on the south shore is of unknown value, as the work crews are from “away” and appear to be quite Teutonic in manner. This battle will surely prove that the term “Civil War” is clearly a misnomer.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again. You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case. Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island. The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office. And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about. The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm. You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise. The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job. You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now. The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead. Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre. The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off. At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”
This scenario is 1) Meant strictly for play against the AI. Although it one player wants to try playing the Axis/Zombies, please feel free. 2) The scenario is meant to be strictly for fun. 3) Watch you ammo loads. Shoot for the head. You only have the ammo you brought into the fight.

Soviet vs. German Meeting Engagement. 60+ turns. Best played as: H2H (Not recommended for vs. AI play due to mounted infantry.)
In recent weeks, this industrial center has been the scene of increasingly sharp clashes between recon units and regular forces. Both sides have traded jabs over this important airplane fabrication city. Both have moved into the town and then been forced out again. No one seems to be able to hold it. The landing gear assembly plant on the edge of town was occupied by the Red Army a few days ago and then burned and destroyed as the Wehrmacht forced them out. Much of the town lies untouched, but the workers and residents know it is just a matter of time before a major battle rages through the streets of their city…
After another bloody engagement, both sides have backed off. Again, in the still of a Sunday morning under the cover of a pounding rainstorm, both sides push forces forward to gain possession of the city.
No one is sure where the front lines lie. Is the enemy in front of you? Or is he gone?
Push forward, as so many before you have tried, and hold this town once and for all!

Desiliens is an ancient Roman town. The map features the ruins of the town, an aquaduct, and the ruins of a villa on a low central hill.
The eastern side of the map is mostly woods, the west is hills and farms. It is most suitable for an assault on the town, but if the focus is shifted to the ruined villa it would be good for a meeting engagement.

Great game Rake. Not much action until the end, but tense the entire time.
Volynovo Aug. ‘42
First impression – big map, rolling hills, seem to have enough troops and firepower. With such a big map, I must be careful not to spread out and loose the power of a concentrated attack. Never chose a dynamic flag before. Three choices. One my right – what seems to be highest ground with a small village – LOTS of open ground to cover going up a fairly steep hill with very few scattered trees. Anything but this. Center – largest village with widely scattered house. Hard to even get house-to-house fighting here. Approach looks good – mostly covered by crest of hill right in front of town; hill 315 on left could be used to get observation on town. Of course, once I cross the crest of the hill I have to cover at least 150m of open steppe. That could be tough. On left, village a little further back. Approach is covered by 315 and smaller rises. Possible to flank through wheat fields. I pick this flag hoping that the center looks more obvious. Damn – this map is huge with huge areas of open terrain.
My troops start clustered in a low area behind some of the higher hills. I have no idea what his units consist of. I assume plenty of AT guns to make my life miserable, tanks and clustered infantry. Must use advantage of longer-range penetration of the Pzr IV. Pzr IIIs won’t be much good until closing. From Russian side, he has a hill that conceals his rear area. He can use this to shuttle troops out of my sight. Key wooded and scattered trees areas covering the approach between center and left (objective) are likely place for AT guns and infantry. Must knock him off of these hills or my approach will be exposed and shut down. All troops are “regular” quality with exception of Pzr IV’s which are vets.
First objective is to get to closest high ground in order to observe enemy and hopefully get some long distance shots off. Rush a 50mm AT gun to best observation spot in center of map. Tanks hull down on other high spots. Nothing moving out there. MG 34s ride tanks and set up. Will need to show an advance across the map in order to not tip him off as to which flag is objective. Hill 315 is occupied and infantry closes in on larger wooded area. HTs shuttle men to left flank, inf observes and creeps forward. Is sneaking worth it? I must be under observation. A-ha! A shot rings out. Must be some “green” Soviets firing too early. More turns and nothing. He is in the wooded area below 315 as expected. Two platoons ready to assault with support. Foxhole spotted! Turn 20 and this game is going to heat up. Cover fire. More holes… looks like a platoon. More cover fire and assault. Wham. Mortars. Not hit too bad. Keep moving closer. Pour on the cover fire and advance to the line of foxholes. Where the hell are the Russians? At least I have the cover of their foxholes… next platoon advances and more empty holes. I practically trip over a lone sharpshooter. The Russians have bugged out, maybe I can still catch them. Advance. No, they are gone. Well, all that and no action. At least I have a good position with a company’s worth of foxholes. His tanks start moving and a tank duel commences. Loses about even, but I lost 2 Pzr IV’s. In the center and right, I move up parts of a company here and there. A shot here and there. He’s out there but not breaking cover. This is going to get ugly when he finally opens up on me. That tension would last for a long time.
From this wooded area, I can attack the center flag or the real objective. Maybe I can keep him guessing more. Meanwhile, I’m advancing on the right as well. Covering these large exposed distance is tiring my men. He has to see me, but I have to stop and rest. I start to push on the right with noisy cover fire. I move in position to attack the center and engage some AT guns and MGs behind the town. I have some men and machines deep on the left. He must know they are there. Nothing else is moving… going to get ugly. Big push for the flag now. I drop my 105 artillery on it for at least 5 rounds. Two tanks must be destroyed or there is not advance. They have taken cover behind the objective since the first tank duel. Time to hunt forward with Pz IV with other in overwatch. Pz IIIs can help but not until I know where he is. Bam! The two T-34s race out of town toward me just as Pz IV is in hull down on hunt mode. At about 150 to 200m first T-34 starts wild reverse while Pz IV stays after him on hunt mode. Lucky set of circumstances. Knock them out and a third further back a few turns later. Very lucky. Infantry on foot advances at last 105s are falling. Village a smoking ruin covered by dust. Hopefully he is blinded and bruised from the artillery. Maybe moved men to cover the center. Time for half track rush to drop men on his door step followed by the foot attack. At around turn 40, all hell breaks loose. Some HT infantry gets slaughtered, others make cover of ruins and engage. Attack from rear amounts to nothing after AT gun turns on me and SMG squads clean up the few infantry. Advance! Foot men are tired after trying to cover 100 – 200m of steppe. Damn – this map is huge with huge areas of open terrain! At this point, I am hoping to edge just 5 to 10m closer to the flag to contest it and break the defenders closest. Victory or defeat could have been the difference between a couple of broken units on either side. In the end, the defenders in trenches were too tough to dig out. Draw.
I love this map. Very representative of the wide open steppes. Excellent detail. Great avenues for approach and features for defense. Force balance seems good. Germans have qualitative advantage with the MG34s range and the Pzr IV. But, as demonstrated, a good defense can make up for those advantages.
My only suggestion would be to make this a variable turn ending instead of a firm 45 turns. Those extra turns in this game would have been a nail biting meat grinder. It would have taken all I had to stay toe-to-toe with the defenders at that flag. Flogging him with tired troops might have eventually lost me the game.
This is one of the great scenarios in my book. Well done.

Greetings
Volynovo, August, 42’
Briefing: My Infantry Battalion has arrived at the Volynovo front with the task of stopping the nazi juggernaut. In the chaos of the front scout positions where not established on key height towards the immanent front so I am unaware of enemy intentions. Intelligence informs me that I face a Mechanized Infantry battalion with panzer support.
Planning: I love defending because I find it that much easier and that much harder for my opponent. I find myself playing a dynamic capture the flag kind of game. In the mindset of a Russian Battalion commander to stop the Germans or receive a bullet I decide to defend all my flags. The flag to my right is located in a small hamlet with open to moderate ground with scattered trees. It also happens to sit on a rise with LOS to the center village flag. In the right hamlet I place a platoon with one 45mm antitank gun and support in the form of machine gun and antitank rifle. Trenches and foxholes are dunged The center flag rests in a village flanked by two rises and one to its rear. Here I positioned three rife platoons with machine and ant-rifle support. I have trenches interconnect among the buildings and foxholes behind them too. On the rise to the rear are two 76.2mm sig antitank guns with mortar support. The third flag is surrounded by a hamlet with a forest the runs between it and the center flag. It has a road with trees running into it. I station a rife platoon with a 45mm antitank gun in and around the hamlet. I keep in reserve a SMG Company and my two T-34 tank platoons. I make fake positions with my extra fallback foxholes way advance of my front lines with LOS to a mortar spotter. I also place my marksmen to the very edge of my deployment zone so they can rush to the forward heights and clue me into the enemy.
Game: I send my Scots out and eatables that the enemy wishes to capture my center or right flank flag from the masse of men and material moving towards them. I have five tanks and two SMG platoons move to the imminent area. Enemy is at first confused with spotting fake company foxhole positions but continues advance to jump off positions. Tanks are used to slowly destroy upright structures in center and right flag areas. Send Single T-34 to harass Scots on left flank and score a Scot car but Panzer rolls out of reverse slop position and knocks out tank. Both 76.2MM sig guns respectfully engage two Panzer IV’s and get confirmed kills before being destroyed. Tank verse Tank peek-a-boo games with me losing more tanks. Enemy makes big push toward right flag with artillery and smoke support. Halftrack carrying troops into hamlet and intense fight breaks out. Flanking force of One Panzer III and two halftracks is engaged with two vehicle kills. Time runs out with real flag being contested.
Scenario: Map is a great southern Russian battlefield with rolling steppes and rustic hamlets. Enough cover and concealment for both parties. Overall a balanced scenario worth another try.

Hi Ken,
This is a reprint of the AAR I sent to MR.
What a great battle This was. I played Russians, defending VS LT in the KOTH tournament round 1.
This map was interesting from the beginning. My initial impressions were such that I decided to defend my right most flag of 3, left, center right and right. The map was large with rolling hills about 1000m out from the flags, moving progressively closer to about 300m from the left flag. The left side was mostly open with scattered tress, while the center right and right were mostly scattered trees and woods. The left offered a decent approach and the shortest route to the flag. Looking at it from the attackers prospective I saw that the right offered a very concealed approach almost up to the right flag in some places. This created a dilemma for me; I really didn't have the forces to be strong everywhere (maybe that was intended ) and having played a few games with LT (I'm 1 and 2) I knew he would see similar things. I choose to reject my left and defend the right. To this end I placed 2 platoons of infantry in trenches straddling the road intersection on the left and a third plat., of infantry in the woods ~150m back. I put out some scouts (ATR's, jeeps and snipers) all across my front. Placed 2 ATG on the left and gave everything else to the center right and right. Including, 6 T-34's, 2 companies of infantry and 2 ATG's. Of the 6 T-34's I placed 3 on the right and 3 I held in the center left. I feel pretty good
I send a jeep out on the far left and right. Several turns go by and I get reports of sound contacts, tanks on my left, infantry on my right. Not good. My left is weakest and is wide open. I've got cover arcs held tight on everything. We're not gonna fire until we see the whites...you know the rest...Wham, up goes the jeep on the right. I watch this over and over. Duh, I don't even grab a screen shot (LT probably did ). I'm dumbfounded, I cannot see what killed me. It hit hard, panzershreck? Cannon? I see (as sound contacts) a plat, of inf. Soon after my left jeep succumbs to fire. But, my driver survives and is near to an ATR hiding. About this time I realize I've been taking mortar fire...hummm...It does no real damage except it takes a powerful CO HQ down from 6 men to 1 effective He's controlling 2 plat of infantry and 2 ATG not to mention a MG or two. All's quiet on the right, my sniper over there has been moving into better position to ID the infantry contacts...I'm still thinking of the brewed up jeep over there so I send one of my T-34's to climb the hill. About this time, I can no longer resist, I spot several PzIII's on a hill, but it's a long shot. I can never sit still on defense my ATG opens up and after many traded shots, ( I'm entrenched) I ko a tank. I also notice there are gun contacts on those far hills facing me..hummmm...I find this out when my T-34 on the right crests the hill and dies. I throw artillery and believe it's nice and effective, find out later I might have got one gun. LT ko's my ATG. Well I can take no more suspense. I have to know how badly I miss judged. What am I facing on my right? I move my remaining 2 tanks around the hill and I spot several AC's and HT's! My guys are having a field day and I'm getting worried now. One only has 2 AP shots left, but the other is okay and I hit a sweet spot. I'm trying to get around his ATGs.
Meanwhill on my left I've reports of at least 15 tanks a SPG and several HT's. In the midst of all these contacts my comarde Larry decides he's going to move laterally across my left the SPG. I cannot resist, I bang away w/my remaining ATG and get no hits and you know it, I lose the ATG.
Back on my right I decide to probe ahead. I have to get those ATG's. LT's coming right down my left and I have nothing but infantry there and only a few of them have molotovs. My 3 T-34's have no LOS to the flag and really can't expose themseleves to the ATG, nice flank shots. I never did take into consideration placing ATG on the hills to cover an attack. I'm in trouble. I probe forward, spot 2 PzIV's and we trade off. I'm blind on my right, the ATG's are still there and I've lost half my armour. I'm in deep doo doo.
The battle kind of slows here. About a platoon of tanks and an HT come down along the map edge on my left, I can only watch. 1 T-34 that I have sitting on the map edge has a narrow LOS and scores on a HT and PzIII.
I have sound contacts all around the left and the battle is on! Larry is keeping excellent formation and coming on strong. I move my tanks to attack 2 to the left and keep 1 in it's start position. I can only harass Larry w/my ATR's, they are next to useless. Couldn't even stop a HT. My tanks are scoring thankfully and a hoard of infantry and armour appear on my far right. No way! Never saw them coming (only a harassing plat.). It is my right. Larry's armoured spearhead in heading straight for the flag. Thankfully the PzIIIs are really no match for T-34's. I never really realized that until this battle. The rest is Katie bar the door and then it's over. I have 1 "hero" tank and 1 beat up ATG left. But, my infantry is pretty much unscathed.
Larry is top shelf. He really kept me off balance and constantly guessing. This scenario was fun, but maybe a little easy. The Russian commander is forced to spread out but if he uses his armour massed he really can break the Axis attack. Maybe substitution of a platoon of PzIII's for PzVI's. Have to be careful here.
Good Stuff!! We're going to round 2!

Reviev and AAR Of Volynovo August 42 KOtH I Round 1 Axis: Larry Thorne Allied: Figo
Axis Major defeat
Review by Larry Thorne
What a fight! Suffered a major defeat. Congratulations on my Awesome opponent Figo who played double or nothing the mind game and lifted an armoured wall spitting fire and destruction on my Final assault! I got to the flag but my poor tankers died confronting the last T-34. After that I tried with my last resort the infantry a Russian style humanwave…those boys were screaming in agony, pain and fear after being fired upon running across the open grounds.
The Map: Is great to assault with Pzs and have the arty and ATGs as fire support. Still there is something funny about it. I myself like the dynamic flags thing but this was the peril for me. The right flag is out in the open and close to positions where one can hide an army and charge it with en masse. This was the thing I failed to do…pick the right flag.
The Battle: The center flag is in too har of a position with LOS/LOF from both sides. Great X-fire ambush spot. Didn´t wanna go for that. So I picked the left flag…so far from the others with a possibility of flanking from the left but risk the defence pull back from Volynovo to reclaim it. So I decided to fake attack right and in the very end bring it all down to the right. The battle was stationed for a long time. Took out 1 T-34 with a lucky shot from over 1200m away with PzIII. Figo did an exellent job with his aggressive defence recon. Risked 2 T-34s and took them around my left for a destruction flanking move. Surprised him with 2 Pz IVs but it didn´t pay off. Those T-34s had destroyed most of my ACs and HTs before they got killed…and I lost both of those PzIVs too. After that the fight was truly on. I started moving everything I got to fake an attack to the right. And “secretly moved a whole lot of harware towards left through the sunken lane in the middlepoint of the map. Sent a recon of 2HTs and 2 PzIII through the right flank…just some ATR fire nothing else. This was the moment when I realized Figo had played a risky game and left the most open flag guarded by 2ATGs I had taken out with mortars a long time ago. I knew I´d lose If I can´t take out the remaining T-34 (which were 3 T-34s actually) Well My attack to right lured them to go after those PzIIs and Took one out with first shot. I realized that those tinfoil Pz don´t have a chanche against T-34 inside 1000m Even with a quicker ROF I penetrated those beasts but obviously they didn´t do much harm to the crews. All kind of hide and seek was going on behind the lines in the far right with few turns to go Charged all my armor and men towards the real flag in the left…In retrospect I can call that the death rode of Pzs at Volynovo. Figo had strong defensive positions and a heroistic T-34 remaining to charge to the town and save it from peril. ATG in a trench did his fare and took out HTs and ACs man the destruction was so bad I only had one PzIII with a broken track killing as much infantry at the right flag as possible and had one shocked HT at left flag but the points he had didn´t have a chance of changing that flag to German position or a questionmark. Even If I had taken the flag the 900points would have not bee enough to make me win…so great were the points gained from my smoking armor all across the steppe. Good job and big applause to the Russian commander Figo!
Suggestions: In retrospect this could be harder for the defender with Standard flags as defender would have to spread the defensive line more. This way the attacker could use the armour superiority better. There is a line to move those T-34s behind those woods and hulldown from left to right so that nothing can touch them from further away (ATG positioned top of the Hills) Very very hard scen H2H for the attacker even with armour superiority…quantity just doesn´t win quality…those German tincan Pzs are superior en masse from far away with their better optics but knifefight with T-34 is just too musch. So if the defender plays his cards right and keeps atleast 3 of Those T-34s hidden till the end..nothing can save those Pzs engaging them from closer than 1000m.
Still enjoyed this fight a lot. I was surprised on the amount of cat and mice engagements this proved to have…great stuff. And against a good tactician on defense it turns out to be a little hard for the attacker (atleast with the tactics I used). I am interested on seeing other results in this. Engaging early or whatnot other tactics are out there…And I think this scenario must be great agains AI too. Might try it someday.
With this result me and my opponent go to round two…hoping to fight this commander again later on the tournament. Good show Figo! and great and tough scen Kenfedoroff ! Happy Loser Larry Thorne

I always put information about the dynamic flag in the attackers briefing. That way he knows about it and how to make a choice for it.
This scenario is on line for round 2 of the tournament so it should get plenty of playtime.

Something Mr Bad Example said caught my eye. So I downloaded this scenario to take a look at it.
He mentioned knowing that there was only one flag worth anything. To me that is a very BIG SPOILER in your briefings. When I use a dynamic flag I never let the defender know that the attacker has that option. So that the defender can't just go running over and defend a single spot that the attacker is moving towards.
Of course the attacker could use that same information as a ruse. I could attack in the wrong direction to denude the "Dynamic" objective so it could work either way.
Something to think about in your briefings about how much information to give away.
Good Hunting.

I just finished playing this one against Chopzilla and posted a major victory after he surrendered, perhaps a bit frustrated, and I can't blame him. The map is great, the scenario is well designed, the forces are well distributed and pretty equal with one notable exception - the T-34's. The Russians get two platoons - more than enough to sit back and pick off all the Axis AFV's with relative impunity. Thiswas my strategy in a nutshell after looking at the terrain and it worked pretty well. The 75mm guns of the Axis SP guns can't get into position fast enough and the 50mm's and thin skin of PZIII's leads to a whole string of burning wrecks in no time while those T-34's reload and reload. I would guess that simply removing one platoon would balance the game perfectly, especially since it was a dynamic flag scenario and one of the flags has nothing but empty steppe in front of it. As is stands the tactics are pretty easy for the SU - put one platoon on each flank and when the battle is joined simply move the other platoon over to the contested flag. One platoon would force more of a choice on the SU player. Finally, this is a great scenario I think - I like that people are starting to make more fictional scenarios, this is an excellent example of how good they can be.

"One and All" have my permission to Edit/Alter or Re-do this scenario in any way, shape or form, and share it with others on the internet. Per my e-mail with Steve of HSG (Aug 29,2004), I am working 6 days a week and do not have time to support this scenario.
I will be happy to delete my version of this scenario if anyone cares to post a more researched and play-tested version of this scenario. The intent for this scenario was fun and action for both sides.
Thanks, Ken
