Kampfgruppe Richter in Budel. Dilemma, fight the allies or retreat?

A Very British Civil War Note: this is clearly a “what-if” scenario, loosely based on the bustling miniatures war gaming off-shoot of the same name. Outstanding work has been done by Solway Crafts and Miniatures, and I credit them with the brilliance of this war gaming theme. Background England, May 1938 (designer note: note the in-game calendar notes “1944”; this is only to create the optics of lush green environment of the British Isles) Weather: overcast, mild, dry The very social fabric of Great Britain was torn during the apocalypse that was The Great War. The mightiest empire on the globe ended victorious, but at what cost? The rigid social hierarchy was shaken, and the world wide waves of social change did not stop at the English Channel. Class structure, worker’s rights, regional animosities have all brewed in the decades following the Great War. This has all been exacerbated by the crippling economic crisis of the 1930s, to which the ever cautious government responded to by constricting public spending ever more. In May 1937, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom married Wallis Simpson. The marriage to Wallis was not supported by Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister; and King Edward refused to abdicate. This marriage left the British government, and most of the people, alienated; and public hatred for King Edward and Queen Wallis rose. Parliament was torn, and in the general election of 1937, Baldwin was defeated. The Conservative party, ripped by the issue of King Edward’s marriage, as well as economic and regional tensions, broke apart, and a large segment of the Tory support went to the British Union of Fascists. Oswald Mosley’s promise to ensure public order, and shore up the Empire, resonated with a public tired of public disturbances, strikes in essential services, and the economic malaise. The Labour party too split, with the more radical sections forming their own splinter parties which ran their own candidates. The 1937 election results saw a fractured parliament, and although only winning slightly over 200 seats, and less than 30% of the vote, the BUF formed the largest caucus in the House of Commons. King Edward VIII asked Oswald Mosely to form a government. Mosley did so and almost immediately issued “Orders of Council”, outlawing strikes, restricting collective bargaining, and establishing new offences for unauthorized public gatherings, and publishing “any article intended to alarm the public”. Any opposition was swiftly responded to, if not by the police, then by Mosely’s own BUF Blackshirts, the BUF’s paramilitary wing. In January 1938, a protest by Dockyard workers in Liverpool was brutally crushed by the BUF and elements of the Regular Army; and violent clashes began across the country; between the Kings troops and those of several other factions. The British Civil War has begun!
Factions: The outbreak of conflict led several groups to attempt to seize the country or their own personal goals. Major factions included: On the Right (Axis in this scenario * The Edwardian Army – elements of the professional Army, bound to King Edward VIII. * The Royal Navy and Royal Marines – bound by tradition and culture to remain loyal to the reigning monarch, and the majority have done so. * The British Union of Fascists (or “BUF”) – the dominant political party, led by Oswald MOSLEY and heavily backed by German and Italian interests. Mosley has garnered considerable support in his efforts to restore order internally and restore the status of Britain’s Empire * The Mosley Youth – a “social club” of young men, who have been drilled and armed by unknown sources, and have formed para-military units to push the BUF agenda. * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Contingents from other fascist and imperialist sympathizers have been formed. Here we will see the presence of the “Hanoverian Legion”, volunteers from Germany, who are backing the Edwardian and BUF efforts On the Left (Allied in this scenario) * The Albertine Army – elements of the regular forces, plus most of the “Territorial Army”, backing the young Prince Albert’s claim to the throne. * The Anglican League - A large army led by a group of bishops and archbishops, they were aligned with the Albertine Army. Many are veterans of the Great War. * The People’s Party Army - Made up of disillusioned Labour party supporters, disgruntled workers and Spanish Civil War veterans, they are seeking to turn Britain into a Socialist state based upon Lenin's Russia. * The Farmer’s Union: radical small plot farmers and farm working hands, seeking better pay, price subsidies, and land redistribution. They are heavily influenced by Marxist doctrine. * The Student’s Union: like students before and after them, the university students have ramparts to thwart whomever they view as authoritarian, * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Groups of Americans, Canadians, and ANZAC units have been formed; here we will see the Lafayette Battalion, formed of French volunteers, many fresh from the savage fighting in Spain. This scenario occurs in the West Coast port town of Twaddlemore. Twaddlemore is the home base for a small Royal Navy destroyer flotilla, as well as being a mid-sized port for international commerce. Given that the United Kingdom lives or dies based on this freedom to trade overseas, the port is vital to all in this conflict. The Royal Navy, which for the most part has remained loyal to King Edward VIII, dispatched the flotilla two days ago to join the rest of the fleet, tasked with stemming the flow of foreign volunteers coming to fight for their faction of choice. Many of these foreigners have come directly from fighting for the Nationalists or the Republicans in Spain, who have endured two years of their own brutal Civil War already. Yesterday the dock workers, who are heavily influenced by communist agents and are affiliated with the People’s Party, refused to move armaments stored in the dock warehouses. Instead, they armed themselves and fighting broke out when security staff sought to control the situation. Who opened fire first is both in dispute and a moot point at this juncture. A company of the Army’s Provost Corps was rushed to Twaddlemore by train, but a bomb was used to derail the trail just outside of town. Multiple factions are either in town currently or rumoured to be headed this way. The Telephone Exchange is the key to communicating with the rest of the country, and is clearly a goal to secure. Likewise, the docks and the armaments stored there in are also of immense value. Lastly, the mysterious new Wireless Tower being built on the south shore is of unknown value, as the work crews are from “away” and appear to be quite Teutonic in manner. This battle will surely prove that the term “Civil War” is clearly a misnomer.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again. You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case. Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island. The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office. And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about. The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm. You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise. The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job. You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now. The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead. Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre. The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off. At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”
This scenario is 1) Meant strictly for play against the AI. Although it one player wants to try playing the Axis/Zombies, please feel free. 2) The scenario is meant to be strictly for fun. 3) Watch you ammo loads. Shoot for the head. You only have the ammo you brought into the fight.

Soviet vs. German Meeting Engagement. 60+ turns. Best played as: H2H (Not recommended for vs. AI play due to mounted infantry.)
In recent weeks, this industrial center has been the scene of increasingly sharp clashes between recon units and regular forces. Both sides have traded jabs over this important airplane fabrication city. Both have moved into the town and then been forced out again. No one seems to be able to hold it. The landing gear assembly plant on the edge of town was occupied by the Red Army a few days ago and then burned and destroyed as the Wehrmacht forced them out. Much of the town lies untouched, but the workers and residents know it is just a matter of time before a major battle rages through the streets of their city…
After another bloody engagement, both sides have backed off. Again, in the still of a Sunday morning under the cover of a pounding rainstorm, both sides push forces forward to gain possession of the city.
No one is sure where the front lines lie. Is the enemy in front of you? Or is he gone?
Push forward, as so many before you have tried, and hold this town once and for all!

Desiliens is an ancient Roman town. The map features the ruins of the town, an aquaduct, and the ruins of a villa on a low central hill.
The eastern side of the map is mostly woods, the west is hills and farms. It is most suitable for an assault on the town, but if the focus is shifted to the ruined villa it would be good for a meeting engagement.

Hi 37mm
Know what you mean about being busy with PBEM games and designing scenario's......not to mention real life stuff!
Maybe on the two player game you can fix the gullys and up the rating on some of the Russian units
The thing to remember with human players, they all use different tactics! So the more options on the map to try different tactics the happier the players will be
I had my orders from Joe himself, " do not give ground comrade and fight to the last tank! " So that's what I plan to do! Mind you, my opponent might just spoil my plan!

No Tommy I havent 'fixed' the gully's I've been busy & I have to make both a PBEM & vs AI game (probably from both sides... sigh).
The only problem I myself saw with the gully was difficulty getting into it, use the line of sight tool & avoid 'slopes'.
I have to say though that in my battle I didn't send many vehicles into it & to some extent piling dozens of vehicles into a crowded gully is asking for trouble...
Hope you enjoy the battle it will be difficult for you but if you accept that with good grace (& a bottle of Vodka) then you'll be fine.
Also don't give up... I was losing something like 80-20 till the final few turns then I managed to get a draw.

Well the first movement turn has gone in! I have to agree with BANNON DC concerning the green Russian units. At the very least the HQ units should be regular or vets. Just hope my Russians can gain cover before the German armour spots them

My opponent has picked out this scenario to test via PBEM. It will be quite awhile before the battle comes to an end but in the meanwhile I will pop in here and post how the battle is getting on. My opponent took the Axis side so I had a good look at the Russian tanks in my force. Nice mixture of armour! Good to see those A\C's have a decent gun on them I think we are playing the latest version as the setup area's for my Russians was ok. Nice looking map, very pleasing to the eye! Also very pleased to see some hiding places out there for my Russians I'm a bit concerned about the gullys. Was this fixed?? The main briefing and the Russian briefing was spartan to say the least. You need to add much more info ( see other designers briefings to get an idea ) so the players are put in the right frame of mind before the map opens up. Well, the setup turn has gone out and the battle is ready to start. Wish me luck comrades!

Yes, I think your suggestion of making separate AI and H2H versions is a winner. Don't forget the map problems though, as Bannon said it's hard to manoeuvre in those slopy gullies - my suggestion is to change the overall map parameter from steep to normal. I'm now at turn 32 and having the stuffing kicked out of me.

Yes as my own battle suggested the action begins at around turn 20 & reaches a climax at turn 50.
I'll need to speed the AI up.
The problem is in PBEM play I'd expect the human Axis player to either launch a lightning strike (A human player will be cresting those hills perhaps by turn 6!) or consider advancing centrally & outflanking the bulk of the Soviet reverse slope defence (presumably to the North-East) even though this risks the Germans being sandwiched by the Soviet reinforcements.
Maybe I should create a vs. AI game & a PBEM game?
I thank the pair of you for your feedback.

Partial AAR (up to turn 30)
Up to 20: So far, I've been watching and waiting in a reverse slope defence. Not much going on, I get bored and pop up to shoot&scoot ocassionally, but otherwise we're waiting for either the AI to cover the ground, which it does at its usual snail's pace, or for reinforcements to come. Turn 20: At last, some reinforcements from the south. But they get stuck in this hidden gully covered in wheat, so they straggle in separated. 25+: More reinforcements coming up from the south. Just a question of shooting them northward. Turn 30: At last, I think I'm ready with the starting force lined up in the big bowl to the west, and the reinforcements lining the trees and gully to the south, mid-way between the enemy (still crawling slowly toward us) and the southern edge where the reinforcements came in.
Now is the moment to unleash the Soviet force.... (More later)
Issues: 1) It's a bit slow against the AI. You have the choice of doing the right thing (staying in reverse slope positions waiting for the right moment) and getting bored, or doing the wrong thing (charging in guns blazing) and having some fun but getting the poop kicked out of you. Perhaps you should shorten distances to make it play faster, eg, put the Germans closer in to start with. 2) There are some flaws at the southern edge, referred to by Bannon earlier. As this deep gully is covered with wheat, you can't see it, and the reinforcement process takes even longer. I would advise lopping off the southern 200m of the map, again to speed things up.
On the positive side, it's a lot more fun than I imagined controlling these pathetic Russian tin cans. I never knew before that the Russkies put 76mm guns on the BT tanks. That must have made them the most powerfully gunned light tanks in the war.
More later when I finish. Bye for now...

*SPOILERS*
No not a victory but a brutal draw (I’m going to post the JPEG’s at the scenario depot soon).Early turns I set up a reverse slope defence. Made a mistake on deployment three BT’s are not in reverse slope on my right flank (actually centre of battlefield). I lose three BT’s.
I wait.
T-26’s arrive they set up a second line of resistance (in ‘the bowl’ with some bushes in it) in case first fails.
I do pop out a tank or two but suffer no losses. Enemy are heading for my left.
My first reinforcements arrive.
The enemy crest the hill & a short range fire-fight occurs at 100m. I win & knock out several enemy tanks. More German tanks crest the hill & again suffer some casualties.
The Germans don’t attempt to crest any more instead they concentrate on my central forces & slowly but surely knock all my tanks out.
More reinforcements arrive BT’s, T-26’s & T-34’s. The T-34’s are bombed, some shocked another immobilized.
The Germans now re-crest the hill & inflict heavy casualties; all my first line tanks are blown up. I try to bring my T-26’s up from ‘the bowl’ but they reverse back down with a bloody nose.
Most of my reinforcements head North West for more reverse slopes, others work their way around to the rear of ‘the bowl’ & join up with those T-26’s though suffer casualties doing so.
My T-34 head straight for the enemy & engage at 800m’s. Even with HE they can kill Germans.
Another lot of T-26’s head east & then North.
By Turn 48 the Germans are winning by a mile however first the T-34 from the south, the tanks in the bowl from the West, More BT’s from the South(actually central) West & the T-26’s from the South(actually central) East begin to score hits.
Within 10 minutes all Germans have been destroyed but my heavy losses meant I still only got a draw.
A human German player could obviously have done better so perhaps I will change things, still the battle was brutal. Everywhere & I mean everywhere was covered in burning wrecks!

AAR --
Held to reverse slopes on the left flank. Sent one platoon of tanks in attempt to flank and scout the right by way of the tiny village and behind the high ground in that area. Sent another platoon to hold the left most flag. On right attempted to cross that wheat field about 20 to 40 m back from scatter trees/gully. Was looking for way into that gulley so I could get closer to enemy. Got whacked at distance of 1600+ meters. Only observer tank left on high ground alive.
In center, popped over hill occasionally to get location of enemy. This usually cost me a tank.
Then waited several turns. Reinforcements start to arrive at Turn20. Armored cars. No good. Some BTs. Good... tracked vehicles. Turn26, platoon of 5 BTs are moving to East to continue flanking/recon mission. Stuka! 1 destroyed, 3! shocked. Ouch. Later, many more BTs and a few T-34s... finally some hope.
Meanwhile in center, the Germans have advanced. I was hoping to do some "pop-ups" (find hull down, fire, and reverse) and get lucky shots at about 400-500m. Didn't get lucky... lost a few tanks. Enemy closing and must be rising as well since some of my positions are now exposed. Most Russian tanks quickly reverse upon being in the German sites. Ultimately, most were not fast enough. Germans cresting hill. Force I had backing up the reverse slope force is annilated quickly. Finally, I have 2 reverse slope tanks left... Pzr IV crests, close in fire at about 30 and 80m... lose closer tank and kill Pzr IV. My only legitimate kill. (Other kill was a wild shot on a light tank at distance.). Center and left destroyed except of a few light tanks with 37mm guns and a few strays. No hope.
Back to right (south). I attempt to exploit the gully (center of map) again as well as taking a large force all the way east and crossing gully at point about where Germans first entered. Germans are in large wheat field at a distance of at least 1500m.
I send at least 2 platoons for the center gully. Most reach it. Once in gully, I have a traffic jam due to rough terrain (more later). I hold back more of this force in wheat field until traffic clears.
East force speeds ahead. Attempts to reach the gully fail as Germans pick me off at great distance.
Last hope is T-34s. If I can get them in position to provide some covering fire and take some shots, I can move up rest of force. T-34s are unable to save the day. They are resilient and take a great number of shots (mostly lower caliber) but are unable to site and target enemy. Hopeless.
I hit ceasefire at Turn 40.
Remarks --
This scenario is not ready yet. You have a few minor problems that create big play hurdles.
* Set up of Germans -- the Germans travel in two large clumps. This is because the AI is stupid. Try speading them out at least twice as much as you start them. Experiment with this. Hopefully, you can get the Germans to advance in 3-4 groups and go after different flags. You have at least 24 German tanks. You could probably take on the Russian force with half that.
* German force -- it is fair to have a mix of regular and vets. The crack and elite tankers are just adding insult to injury. After viewing the aftermath, these 4-5 tanks had a vastly disproportionate number of kills compared to the regular and vets. (1-3 kills vs 4-5 kills a piece). Most of these kills were at distances of 1500- 2000m against moving targets. Unnessary for the AI or a human player. The heavy guns the Germans get later are of no use to the AI. The AI will not unlimber them and set them up unless the tractor is taken out. Otherwise, at the end of the game they were hiding in the trees still attached to the tractor. Plus, to a human they are unnecessary.
* Russian force -- All green. Yes, this is their first battle, but some variety is needed. These tanks are no match for the Pzr III and IV on any day. Making them green just widens the gap. To rationalize -- many of these men were probably proficient with their weapons and had been in the army for a while. Some could at least rate "regular." On the CM battlefield this translates into 65 second delays for a simple one way-point command at times. Some complex commands (like trying to navigate the gully) were 180 second delays. Plus target accuracy suffers significantly.
* Some Russian units -- the armored car reinforcements on turn 20 are not suited for this map. They are extremely slow. Replace with tracked vehicles. T-34s -- why no AP? I know there was a chronic shortage of ammo for the T-34s at this stage in the way, but having none at all makes them completely ineffective in this scenario. At the distance my T-34s encountered the enemy, they would not fire upon them because the AI knew the chance for a kill with HE was near 0. You hamstrung the only hope the Russians had.
* Map -- The map was good. Large wide-open space to allow tank combat at maximum range. One minor and one major problem. Minor -- the reinforcement depressions you have made in the south are too deep. You have a large bit of slope terrain that makes it difficult to get out of. The slope itself is concealed to a quick view because the whole area is wheat. Major -- the gullys you have are ideal for infiltrating. The sides of the gullys are too steep and almost all slope. You can't drive a tank over slope. The gully itself is too hard to get into -- in the center, there was only 1 place I found access to it. On the east, 2 or 3 places. Inside the center part of the gully, navigation was extremely difficult. In a number of places, you have to leave the cover of the gully, hit the high ground and dive back in. In other places, the gully floor is too narrow and impassible. The AI tries to pathfind around these spots and often left the gully to do stupid manueving in the high ground. None of my tanks made it through the gully in the center or even into the gully on the east. Smooth the slopes and widen the valley.
* Pacing -- you need to pick up the pace of reinforcements. First guys come in at 20. From around turn 10, I was where I wanted my units to be and realized I could do nothing against the Germans at long range. I really just skipped a lot of these turns. You can start the reinforcements around turn 10... it will still be turn 20 before a viable Russian force in on the board.
Conclusion -- Have you playtested this scenario to a victory as the Russians? If so, you are an excellent tanker. I could not get close to the Germans and saw no possibility of closing with them to get within killing range.
The map fixes are easy to do. You need to play with the force balance and then playtest this a few times.

I've just started... five turns in, and it's looking scary. How can I keep off those PzIIIs? So far, I'm maintaining a full reverse slope defence, hoping the Krauts get close enough to dent. Meanwhile, the tiny setup zone you left to the south allows me to send a platoon of T-26s to flank the enemy. Here's hopin'!

You know that 12.7mm HMG on the T-40 can be surprisingly effective I've knocked out PzI & II's with them!

BTW, it scares me to play USSR with these sad, early-war tin cans. I mean, a T-40? With only machine guns for armament? And green crews? Oy vay, we're gonna get wiped! More later...

Bannon I'll consider putting some variety into the experience levels of the Soviet units but as you point out this is probably the first battle any of them have ever fought.

Bloody Hell I uploaded an older version (I'm sure that had been deleted). I apologise I'll upload the correct version as soon as possible.
Murph the fix probably won’t work.
I suggest you swap the setup zones & the friendly edges alternatively just wait till I upload again.
I again apologise.

Hi there, just a quick note...
The map is nice, very scenic, but there's something very wrong with the setup zones. In fact, they're backwards.
The Russian force is all within the Green axis setup zone, to the west. The German force is all within the Red allied setup zone to the east. This means it's impossble to set up your forces satisfactorily. It also means that each player can set up forces in the middle of the other's at the start.
Meanwhile, looking at the parameters screen, the west edge is friendly to axis and the east to the allies.
Suggested fix: put the Russians to the East inside the red zone, and the Germans to the west, in the green zone. This should make it playable. IMHO, it is at present unplayable.

Hello 37mm
Took a look at your scenario. I started to play as the Russians.
A quick look at the map makes me wonder if this is the finalized version. The set up zone you have for the Russians contains no units. You also have a few single square red set up zones with no units as well. The location where you have placed the bulk of the russian tank forces contains no set up zone so you can not actuall place or set up the Russian forces. Also, you have 3 T-40 tankettes that look like you may have added them as an after thought and forgot to place them. (I've done this myself ).
I took a look at the Russian force and the placements. All Green. You may want to add a little variety to this force. Certainly some of the Russian tankers were at least proficient with their weapons and could rate "regular." I understant this would most likely be the first engagement under fire for most of these men but some would be better than others.
I did not look at the German units as I am hoping to play this all the way through. I like these early war scenario with these hopelessly thin skinned Russian tanks.
The map itself looks pretty cool. "Wheat. Endless fields of wheat" (Woody Allen from some movie).
Also, on the scenario submission form the points is the total points. You are closer to 6000 than to 2200.
Let me know if the scenario is set up the way you intended. Post a revised version if not. I'm looking forward to playing this.
Bannon
