Kampfgruppe Richter in Budel. Dilemma, fight the allies or retreat?

A Very British Civil War Note: this is clearly a “what-if” scenario, loosely based on the bustling miniatures war gaming off-shoot of the same name. Outstanding work has been done by Solway Crafts and Miniatures, and I credit them with the brilliance of this war gaming theme. Background England, May 1938 (designer note: note the in-game calendar notes “1944”; this is only to create the optics of lush green environment of the British Isles) Weather: overcast, mild, dry The very social fabric of Great Britain was torn during the apocalypse that was The Great War. The mightiest empire on the globe ended victorious, but at what cost? The rigid social hierarchy was shaken, and the world wide waves of social change did not stop at the English Channel. Class structure, worker’s rights, regional animosities have all brewed in the decades following the Great War. This has all been exacerbated by the crippling economic crisis of the 1930s, to which the ever cautious government responded to by constricting public spending ever more. In May 1937, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom married Wallis Simpson. The marriage to Wallis was not supported by Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister; and King Edward refused to abdicate. This marriage left the British government, and most of the people, alienated; and public hatred for King Edward and Queen Wallis rose. Parliament was torn, and in the general election of 1937, Baldwin was defeated. The Conservative party, ripped by the issue of King Edward’s marriage, as well as economic and regional tensions, broke apart, and a large segment of the Tory support went to the British Union of Fascists. Oswald Mosley’s promise to ensure public order, and shore up the Empire, resonated with a public tired of public disturbances, strikes in essential services, and the economic malaise. The Labour party too split, with the more radical sections forming their own splinter parties which ran their own candidates. The 1937 election results saw a fractured parliament, and although only winning slightly over 200 seats, and less than 30% of the vote, the BUF formed the largest caucus in the House of Commons. King Edward VIII asked Oswald Mosely to form a government. Mosley did so and almost immediately issued “Orders of Council”, outlawing strikes, restricting collective bargaining, and establishing new offences for unauthorized public gatherings, and publishing “any article intended to alarm the public”. Any opposition was swiftly responded to, if not by the police, then by Mosely’s own BUF Blackshirts, the BUF’s paramilitary wing. In January 1938, a protest by Dockyard workers in Liverpool was brutally crushed by the BUF and elements of the Regular Army; and violent clashes began across the country; between the Kings troops and those of several other factions. The British Civil War has begun!
Factions: The outbreak of conflict led several groups to attempt to seize the country or their own personal goals. Major factions included: On the Right (Axis in this scenario * The Edwardian Army – elements of the professional Army, bound to King Edward VIII. * The Royal Navy and Royal Marines – bound by tradition and culture to remain loyal to the reigning monarch, and the majority have done so. * The British Union of Fascists (or “BUF”) – the dominant political party, led by Oswald MOSLEY and heavily backed by German and Italian interests. Mosley has garnered considerable support in his efforts to restore order internally and restore the status of Britain’s Empire * The Mosley Youth – a “social club” of young men, who have been drilled and armed by unknown sources, and have formed para-military units to push the BUF agenda. * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Contingents from other fascist and imperialist sympathizers have been formed. Here we will see the presence of the “Hanoverian Legion”, volunteers from Germany, who are backing the Edwardian and BUF efforts On the Left (Allied in this scenario) * The Albertine Army – elements of the regular forces, plus most of the “Territorial Army”, backing the young Prince Albert’s claim to the throne. * The Anglican League - A large army led by a group of bishops and archbishops, they were aligned with the Albertine Army. Many are veterans of the Great War. * The People’s Party Army - Made up of disillusioned Labour party supporters, disgruntled workers and Spanish Civil War veterans, they are seeking to turn Britain into a Socialist state based upon Lenin's Russia. * The Farmer’s Union: radical small plot farmers and farm working hands, seeking better pay, price subsidies, and land redistribution. They are heavily influenced by Marxist doctrine. * The Student’s Union: like students before and after them, the university students have ramparts to thwart whomever they view as authoritarian, * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Groups of Americans, Canadians, and ANZAC units have been formed; here we will see the Lafayette Battalion, formed of French volunteers, many fresh from the savage fighting in Spain. This scenario occurs in the West Coast port town of Twaddlemore. Twaddlemore is the home base for a small Royal Navy destroyer flotilla, as well as being a mid-sized port for international commerce. Given that the United Kingdom lives or dies based on this freedom to trade overseas, the port is vital to all in this conflict. The Royal Navy, which for the most part has remained loyal to King Edward VIII, dispatched the flotilla two days ago to join the rest of the fleet, tasked with stemming the flow of foreign volunteers coming to fight for their faction of choice. Many of these foreigners have come directly from fighting for the Nationalists or the Republicans in Spain, who have endured two years of their own brutal Civil War already. Yesterday the dock workers, who are heavily influenced by communist agents and are affiliated with the People’s Party, refused to move armaments stored in the dock warehouses. Instead, they armed themselves and fighting broke out when security staff sought to control the situation. Who opened fire first is both in dispute and a moot point at this juncture. A company of the Army’s Provost Corps was rushed to Twaddlemore by train, but a bomb was used to derail the trail just outside of town. Multiple factions are either in town currently or rumoured to be headed this way. The Telephone Exchange is the key to communicating with the rest of the country, and is clearly a goal to secure. Likewise, the docks and the armaments stored there in are also of immense value. Lastly, the mysterious new Wireless Tower being built on the south shore is of unknown value, as the work crews are from “away” and appear to be quite Teutonic in manner. This battle will surely prove that the term “Civil War” is clearly a misnomer.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again. You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case. Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island. The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office. And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about. The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm. You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise. The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job. You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now. The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead. Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre. The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off. At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”
This scenario is 1) Meant strictly for play against the AI. Although it one player wants to try playing the Axis/Zombies, please feel free. 2) The scenario is meant to be strictly for fun. 3) Watch you ammo loads. Shoot for the head. You only have the ammo you brought into the fight.

Soviet vs. German Meeting Engagement. 60+ turns. Best played as: H2H (Not recommended for vs. AI play due to mounted infantry.)
In recent weeks, this industrial center has been the scene of increasingly sharp clashes between recon units and regular forces. Both sides have traded jabs over this important airplane fabrication city. Both have moved into the town and then been forced out again. No one seems to be able to hold it. The landing gear assembly plant on the edge of town was occupied by the Red Army a few days ago and then burned and destroyed as the Wehrmacht forced them out. Much of the town lies untouched, but the workers and residents know it is just a matter of time before a major battle rages through the streets of their city…
After another bloody engagement, both sides have backed off. Again, in the still of a Sunday morning under the cover of a pounding rainstorm, both sides push forces forward to gain possession of the city.
No one is sure where the front lines lie. Is the enemy in front of you? Or is he gone?
Push forward, as so many before you have tried, and hold this town once and for all!

Desiliens is an ancient Roman town. The map features the ruins of the town, an aquaduct, and the ruins of a villa on a low central hill.
The eastern side of the map is mostly woods, the west is hills and farms. It is most suitable for an assault on the town, but if the focus is shifted to the ruined villa it would be good for a meeting engagement.

Played again, although for some reason the new version does not allow single player so I had to play hotseat against myself, it was kind of fun... err sort of. Anyway, the breifings are fine as far as I can see. Ko'd every Russian tank, and just about all the other AFVs too this time around. Lost five of my own, one KT, and the others were ACs. Intersting fight once again, although it would be nice if the KT reinforcements arrived in smaller bunches, as it is they are all over the place and can get bogged before than even get from the back of the map (near the main road). I didn't get to exit any, because the game ended with a Russian surrender on turn 37. Total victory for the Germans. I basicly used the Russians very much like the AI did in the game, just sit and ambush.

One of the great things about this scenario is the fantastic noise of a high velocity 88 firing followed most often than not by the clang and bang of an Ivan tank going up in smoke ;) I have'nt played many actions with KTs so this I did enjoy cos you have a whole pack. I liked the map overall. a couple of wee terrain glitches such as roller coaster roads so maybe another wee check over the relative terrain heights might just smooth out some of that. A minor detail but it would take the make from great to excellent IMHO :) A nice touch was some of the characters who haunt TPG and were involved in the discussion about combat experience. Three sadly did'nt make it through this action. Poor Old Spike's platoon took point and as I said early attacked very aggressively. sadly the platton CO POS's alter ego was KIA, but the kampfgruppe CO has put in for the Knight Cross for his sterling efforts. Mad Russian's alter ego was also KIA at a cross roads that was the scene of the heaviest fighting. My alter ego also met his end here when his KT was immobilsed. he stuck it out shooting up several Soviet tanks until a direct hit brewed up the tank killing all the crew. One side of this was you actually felt like there was a connection between you and the wee pixel tanks locked in combat cos of the names. Or maybe I'm playing too much of this :) I hardly used the recon units in this. the ones I did died - suddenyl and hideously and I could'nt bring myself to send them forwards to certain death. Although the AI attacked in the same old way, and I saw it off in the same old way, it's infantry were a freaking pain! I rekon they did for more KTs by immobilising them than I about lost to tank fire. Don't underestimate infantry when your cruising along with your unbertank eh? I enjoyed this immensley. The traffic management can become tedious, but the rollicking action really does outweigh any drawbacks to managing a convoy along narrow roads. many thanks for taking the time to put this together PzA
Cheers fur noo George

Hi Fighting my way through the town. At first I thought I was just going to waltz through blowing away any Russkie tank that popped it's turret up, but now my casualties are mounting. I'm nearly two thirds way through and now trying to pull back my rearguard. It's a great wee action this, KTs and JSII aside this has some great tactical choices. I must admit I've hardly used all my recon units. The few that went into action died for quickly, so I'm loath to commit any more into action. Of the star cast Poor Old Spikes alter ego is my first platoon HQ to go. He'd have liked how he met his end though - fighting aggresively with the point platoon I'm keeping my alter ego way back I'll keep you posted when I through.
cheers fur noo George

Panzerman - I understood your points. What is fun for us scenario scriptors to write about in briefings is not always what the play tester is interested in wrapping his brain around. Thanks for playing, enjoying and sharing your thoughts on BS&S. Try the modified version next and tell me what you think about the briefings.

Blood Sweat and Steel is modified and ready for more playtesting. Not bigger just better. Thanks to FB, it now features more concise & informative briefings. Also added victory flags to motivate the AI when it is the Axis player. Made some other tweaks to the map and OB which are worthwhile enhancements over the orig. It is Large, but IMHO, easy to play. Really fun for the King Tiger vs Stalin II enthusiasts. Historical-Fiction based on Tank Battle at Lisow, Poland, 13 Jan '45. Best of all - no charge to you.

PzAufklarung: I rather liked your side breifing, I just found the main one a little long, but I'll often just read a bit of the main one and skip to the side based briefing unless its very short. Its not a lack of quality, just personal taste. I'm going to play the battle again, loved it!

Guess your the only one then. All I hear is that I need to fix typos. Just as you like nice long briefings, I like to tell a little story, more so with fictional battles, and even historical ones too. My idea is to draw the player into the battlefield so to speak, but thats another kettle of fish altogether.

MR Just a follow-up to your input & observations from the past week on BS&S.
Quote: The research I have on the battle shows that there were some Tiger I's in the fight as well and that is why the Tiger Bn was overstrength.
According to Wilbeck, Russ Schneider & Wolfg Schneider 424 picked up 11 KTs from sPz Abt 509 in early Dec 44; 509 then received 45 new KTs in three consignments completed circa 1 Jan 45. Will have to do more research to found out disposition of 509's remaining VIEs after they received all their new VIBs. All my sources seem to agree that at least 30 KTs went into action at Lisow while in retrograde march toward Kielce. Pls Let me know what sources you have on the action .
Quote: The experience levels you've chosen for the KT's is interesting. I think they are all way too high. This unit proved that it was not of high quality. They were not destroyed in combat piecemeal but in an ambush as they drove through Lissow. They went into town without any recon first and were destroyed in the town.
You may be correct. My sources give their stats as 20-27 kills vs 0 combat losses on 1/12. Ops around Lisow on 1/13 were more complicated than the ambush. 424 initially organized a set-piece attack along three axes before ever entering the town -- 424 claimed as many as 70 enemy kills (mostly T34s) to 10 combined combat & mechanical losses. The successful Soviet ambush by a small number of JSIIs and ATGs that killed the battalion wholesale (only 1/2 dozen or so KTs came out of it)seems to have happened later on the 13th and happened because no recon of the route thru town occurred (not indicative of a hi-qual unit). I'm reserving judgment on 424's quality at this point - made them vets to please Spike.
Quote: Back to the experience levels...the platoon commanders for the KT's are all veteran with the next tank being crack. Seems like the more experienced crew men would be the platoon leaders.
Good point. Admittedly betrays my core belief that the NCO TCs as a general rule are more technically and tactically proficient - Ernst, Barkmann, Wittmann were all cracks and elites as NCOs before anybody up-the-chain decided to make them officers and platoon commanders.
Quote: Looks like an interesting challenge.
If it proves to be an interesting challenge then I have accomplished my mission.
Thanks again

23 years in the military (6-infantry, 23 MI) has taught me one thing -- the typical battlefield commander NEVER complains about getting too much info - he DOES complain if the info is ALWAYS wrong; he NEVER expects it ALWAYS to be correct - that's why he ALWAYS keeps his recon resources active.
Eight pages of briefings in CM is like 8 panels of a comic strip. No fair complaining about the combined length of two briefs - a "4-page" scenario brief plus a "4-page" mission brief as "an "8-page brief;" in CM that translates to less than one page of actual text (1/2 of which is a laundary list of units) - about the minimum needed to answer the average player's info needs.
Based on f/b recd so far - will definitely keep in mind that the hard-core test player wants scenarios with less subtlety, imagination and sophistication in concept.

My briefings are probably longer than anyone else's in the hobby. I make it a point to give the essential information up front so that if the player doesn't want all the supporting text he can skip in and not hurt his game play.
Panzerman for every comment I get on my briefings that hold your point of view I get about six that say they like them LONG!!!

Geez POS I don't know what to tell you. Use the editor if you want to preview the unit set-up on the map. No Allied reinforcements arrive before turn 15. Everything that is "popping up in your rear" are units that start out on the map and are lying in ambush (SPOILER) 22 JS2s, 10 ATGs (5ea 76.2mm and 57mm), 6 ATR teams and three TK Teams all in and around the town. In fact you have no conventional "rear area" on this map. Your recce forces have just arrived from three different directions to probe the town and scout out the enemy for the Big Cats. Use your recon to find the bad guys' ambush positions and give battle with KTs as they arrive - but be sure to keep them moving so you can exit as many as possible. I admit the setup is asymmetric but that's usually how the fecal matter sticks to the wall after it hits the fan...What you want in the brief is not known until your recce mates do their job.
I see what you mean about my briefs. You want all the essential elements of information up front - I have hidden them on purpose because discovering them is a critical part of winning the fight.
Good training for me as a designer...

I'm with POS on this one. The 8 pages, I didn't even look at them. I read my side breifing and that was it. I have better things to do with my time then spend half an hour reading that first section. General rule of thumb from one scenario designer to another.... Keep the briefings.... brief!!!!!!!!!

Hey PzAuf thanks for the 3 e-mails filling me in with vitally-important stuff i needed to know, but it should have been in the briefing! I had to abandon before any real shooting began because i felt i was playing blindfolded. My suggestion after this first playtest is to therefore scrap the useless 8-page briefing and replace it with a neat little 1-pager containing rough general info about where the enemy is at the start, what he consists of, and where and when his reinfs are likely to appear and what they'll consist of. And its essential to mention the crucial exit point structure in the brief too, otherwise players will be playing blind without the necessary info to conduct the battle properly..

PzMann Thanks for the F/B; just when I was getting ready to go back into my camouflaged hide position. MR and I have been exchanging good ideas on this one. Too many versions of the truth are out there about Lisow. Axis History site page on 424th claims 65 t34/85s from 10 GTA(C) were on-hand and 424 did fine (20+kills to 0) until it ventured into town without any recon. AH article also implies 424 used a very daring attack plan with one company approaching from east while other two presumably came in from S and SW. I am glad the exit points posed the appropriate (intended) challenge for you.

Played this battle against the AI, and I must say its an interesting fight. At first I just went through the town killing the poor Ruskies with very few losses, untill some of them showed up behind me! I found this very interesting as I lost an entire platoon of KT that had just arrived to T-34s which appeared right behind them a few terns later. I lost out big time, not because I couldn't destory the Ruskies, which I did, but rather due to the speed of my adavance. To clear out all Russian troops out and safely adavance towards the exit zone took me 34 turns, leaving very little time for them to exit. I ended up with -1500 or more points because of this. Next time I may try a different way of attacking the village, which will lend to a faster advance. All in all I enjoyed it even though I didn't win in the points.

Thanks for the f/b and comments. I agree on the snow, I followed Berlichtingen's lead from the in-game Death Ride of the 424th (cold&wet - he used fog I chose overcast).
We no doubt have different references - I listed mine in the briefs - I cede you the point on the PSW 234s - Chamberlain & Doyle indicate the total of all models -/1 thru -/4 may have been fewer than the total number of KTs produced - like the quality of the units, the 234s are a lark -- I'm not quite sure how to balance realism and fun so I tend to tilt in the latter direction. The real story is worse than heart-breaking...for both sides. Check out Max Hasting's Armageddon.
Wanted it to be an entertaining training exercise for the "experience level" string gang. It's supposed to be alternative history.
Will try to send you a link (reliability unknown) to an interresting account of the action I read just yesterday.

I took a look at the map. Quite impressive. I was surprised not to see snow in a January scenario though.
The research I have on the battle shows that there were some Tiger I's in the fight as well and that is why the Tiger Bn was overstrength.
The experience levels you've chosen for the KT's is interesting. I think they are all way too high. This unit proved that it was not of high quality. The JS-2 was also reported destroyed.
Back to the experience levels...the platoon commanders for the KT's are all veteran with the next tank being crack. Seems like the more experienced crew men would be the platoon leaders. Just a thought.
One other thing. The Puma's were more scarce during the war than KT's since less of them were made. You have a very extensive recon element with these KT's and I'm not sure that could have all come from a single beatup Panzer Division.
Looks like an interesting challenge. If I get the chance in the next few days I'll have to give it a try.
Good Hunting.
