A Very British Civil War Note: this is clearly a âwhat-ifâ scenario, loosely based on the bustling miniatures war gaming off-shoot of the same name. Outstanding work has been done by Solway Crafts and Miniatures, and I credit them with the brilliance of this war gaming theme. Background England, May 1938 (designer note: note the in-game calendar notes â1944â; this is only to create the optics of lush green environment of the British Isles) Weather: overcast, mild, dry The very social fabric of Great Britain was torn during the apocalypse that was The Great War. The mightiest empire on the globe ended victorious, but at what cost? The rigid social hierarchy was shaken, and the world wide waves of social change did not stop at the English Channel. Class structure, workerâs rights, regional animosities have all brewed in the decades following the Great War. This has all been exacerbated by the crippling economic crisis of the 1930s, to which the ever cautious government responded to by constricting public spending ever more. In May 1937, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom married Wallis Simpson. The marriage to Wallis was not supported by Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister; and King Edward refused to abdicate. This marriage left the British government, and most of the people, alienated; and public hatred for King Edward and Queen Wallis rose. Parliament was torn, and in the general election of 1937, Baldwin was defeated. The Conservative party, ripped by the issue of King Edwardâs marriage, as well as economic and regional tensions, broke apart, and a large segment of the Tory support went to the British Union of Fascists. Oswald Mosleyâs promise to ensure public order, and shore up the Empire, resonated with a public tired of public disturbances, strikes in essential services, and the economic malaise. The Labour party too split, with the more radical sections forming their own splinter parties which ran their own candidates. The 1937 election results saw a fractured parliament, and although only winning slightly over 200 seats, and less than 30% of the vote, the BUF formed the largest caucus in the House of Commons. King Edward VIII asked Oswald Mosely to form a government. Mosley did so and almost immediately issued âOrders of Councilâ, outlawing strikes, restricting collective bargaining, and establishing new offences for unauthorized public gatherings, and publishing âany article intended to alarm the publicâ. Any opposition was swiftly responded to, if not by the police, then by Moselyâs own BUF Blackshirts, the BUFâs paramilitary wing. In January 1938, a protest by Dockyard workers in Liverpool was brutally crushed by the BUF and elements of the Regular Army; and violent clashes began across the country; between the Kings troops and those of several other factions. The British Civil War has begun!
Factions: The outbreak of conflict led several groups to attempt to seize the country or their own personal goals. Major factions included: On the Right (Axis in this scenario * The Edwardian Army â elements of the professional Army, bound to King Edward VIII. * The Royal Navy and Royal Marines â bound by tradition and culture to remain loyal to the reigning monarch, and the majority have done so. * The British Union of Fascists (or âBUFâ) â the dominant political party, led by Oswald MOSLEY and heavily backed by German and Italian interests. Mosley has garnered considerable support in his efforts to restore order internally and restore the status of Britainâs Empire * The Mosley Youth â a âsocial clubâ of young men, who have been drilled and armed by unknown sources, and have formed para-military units to push the BUF agenda. * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Contingents from other fascist and imperialist sympathizers have been formed. Here we will see the presence of the âHanoverian Legionâ, volunteers from Germany, who are backing the Edwardian and BUF efforts On the Left (Allied in this scenario) * The Albertine Army â elements of the regular forces, plus most of the âTerritorial Armyâ, backing the young Prince Albertâs claim to the throne. * The Anglican League - A large army led by a group of bishops and archbishops, they were aligned with the Albertine Army. Many are veterans of the Great War. * The Peopleâs Party Army - Made up of disillusioned Labour party supporters, disgruntled workers and Spanish Civil War veterans, they are seeking to turn Britain into a Socialist state based upon Lenin's Russia. * The Farmerâs Union: radical small plot farmers and farm working hands, seeking better pay, price subsidies, and land redistribution. They are heavily influenced by Marxist doctrine. * The Studentâs Union: like students before and after them, the university students have ramparts to thwart whomever they view as authoritarian, * Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Groups of Americans, Canadians, and ANZAC units have been formed; here we will see the Lafayette Battalion, formed of French volunteers, many fresh from the savage fighting in Spain. This scenario occurs in the West Coast port town of Twaddlemore. Twaddlemore is the home base for a small Royal Navy destroyer flotilla, as well as being a mid-sized port for international commerce. Given that the United Kingdom lives or dies based on this freedom to trade overseas, the port is vital to all in this conflict. The Royal Navy, which for the most part has remained loyal to King Edward VIII, dispatched the flotilla two days ago to join the rest of the fleet, tasked with stemming the flow of foreign volunteers coming to fight for their faction of choice. Many of these foreigners have come directly from fighting for the Nationalists or the Republicans in Spain, who have endured two years of their own brutal Civil War already. Yesterday the dock workers, who are heavily influenced by communist agents and are affiliated with the Peopleâs Party, refused to move armaments stored in the dock warehouses. Instead, they armed themselves and fighting broke out when security staff sought to control the situation. Who opened fire first is both in dispute and a moot point at this juncture. A company of the Armyâs Provost Corps was rushed to Twaddlemore by train, but a bomb was used to derail the trail just outside of town. Multiple factions are either in town currently or rumoured to be headed this way. The Telephone Exchange is the key to communicating with the rest of the country, and is clearly a goal to secure. Likewise, the docks and the armaments stored there in are also of immense value. Lastly, the mysterious new Wireless Tower being built on the south shore is of unknown value, as the work crews are from âawayâ and appear to be quite Teutonic in manner. This battle will surely prove that the term âCivil Warâ is clearly a misnomer.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of âThe Outbreakâ. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more⌠the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little â the cause â the prognosis â or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown â at least to the general populace. What the âgovernmentâ knows may be something else again. You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case. Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of âShady Islandâ, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you donât know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island. The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governorâs office. And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about. The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuckâs last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesnât necessarily match their enthusiasm. You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a âfascist edictâ that all patients in suspected cases of the âoutbreakâ be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. âIt reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!â Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as âpatients, not criminalsâ. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise. The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job. You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now. The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead. Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre. The phone rings again⌠it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off. At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous â10-78â calls are received â âofficer need assistance!â⌠What the?????â
This scenario is 1) Meant strictly for play against the AI. Although it one player wants to try playing the Axis/Zombies, please feel free. 2) The scenario is meant to be strictly for fun. 3) Watch you ammo loads. Shoot for the head. You only have the ammo you brought into the fight.

Soviet vs. German Meeting Engagement. 60+ turns. Best played as: H2H (Not recommended for vs. AI play due to mounted infantry.)
In recent weeks, this industrial center has been the scene of increasingly sharp clashes between recon units and regular forces. Both sides have traded jabs over this important airplane fabrication city. Both have moved into the town and then been forced out again. No one seems to be able to hold it. The landing gear assembly plant on the edge of town was occupied by the Red Army a few days ago and then burned and destroyed as the Wehrmacht forced them out. Much of the town lies untouched, but the workers and residents know it is just a matter of time before a major battle rages through the streets of their cityâŚ
After another bloody engagement, both sides have backed off. Again, in the still of a Sunday morning under the cover of a pounding rainstorm, both sides push forces forward to gain possession of the city.
No one is sure where the front lines lie. Is the enemy in front of you? Or is he gone?
Push forward, as so many before you have tried, and hold this town once and for all!

This CMBO map is built from a topographical map of the little town of Seville, NE of Melbourne, Australia. My idea was to lauch a Brit brigade (3 btns) across it at a German static defence screening mobile reserves.

Desiliens is an ancient Roman town. The map features the ruins of the town, an aquaduct, and the ruins of a villa on a low central hill.
The eastern side of the map is mostly woods, the west is hills and farms. It is most suitable for an assault on the town, but if the focus is shifted to the ruined villa it would be good for a meeting engagement.

Imagine if just a single KT made a very late appearance in our game? It wouldn't last long no doubt, but might bag a few kills before it goes and stalled the final push a little bit. Might be something for Warmonger to tinker with.

Good scenario, Warmonger.
I did loose some time waiting (about 4 or 5 minutes) for an artillery strike from the large caliber guns (it is about a 10-12 minute delay). GJK still had an 88 in the center of the map at the time. He also had a line of HTs and infantry covering the next block which I had to jump to on the Russian left. Didn't seem practical to try to rush them and get shot up for little gain. I forget how I knocked out the 88 but while waiting for the arty, I was able to creep some armor forward and get some of the HTs.That heavy arty was my "hero" unit. It had about 30 kills plus maybe a vehicle or two.
Funny thing while attacking the Kroll. I had just taken one of the heavy buildings with an infantry charge. I turned my heavy assault gun to work over the German infantry in the next building. The large caliber fire from my assault gun spooked my own infantry and caused a rout. I had to cease fire and get some fresh infantry in there! (I think the building they were in was weakened... probably a good idea for them to flee... they should have trusted their comrades. )
I was disappointed not to be able to go for the final assault on the Reichstag after all that work. Gary still had some fight left, but he would not have withstood the final wave.
One thing became immediately apparent. The Russian infantry ran out of ammo very quickly. It looked like they had the default ammo load (about 48). The first wave against the Kroll went through half of this just taking the first few buildings. Sustained fighting was out of the question for the on-map companies. In fact, I had a fair amount of infantry left at the end of the game, but 90% of it had "low" ammo. The SMG infantry will go through its 15 default ammo load in one quick 3-5 minute firefight. (Tricky balancing them since they are so devasting in close action).
A suggestion for making the Reichstag truly a "last stand" fight would be to add a few very late game reinforcements. Since the Russians will most likely be fairly beat up and low on ammo by the time they reach the building, any German reinforcements should be balanced somehow (low ammo, reduced strength, low quality (like clerks pressed into action), etc.). (See my tip "No Surrender" in the Design Tips section for details)
The game ended on turn 43 or 44 with a surrender. I had a smoke screen just coming down and was ready to charge the building on the right within one or two turns. On the left I was 2 or 3 turns from possibly being able to charge although there where still Germans popping up over there. My infantry was completely out of ammo (except of one platoon I tried to keep fresh and a few strays) but I had a lot of them. Still had plenty of vehicles with enough ammo for a few more turns.
GJK and Bannon
Good fight and the first Allied victory. What turn did it end on? Bannon post said that it was on turn 41 a few days ago. It looks like the Germans surrendered. Is that right? Loosing the Tigers is a big blow to the German defense as without them keeping the Russian armor at bay it is just a matter of time before the Germans are swamped by the Russians.
Thanks for play testing this scenario.
Two player tests are the real acid test for an scenario. If the players both enjoy themselves I am happy. I know they are investing a lot of time playing so it better be enjoyable.
Thanks again

Very bloody fight! Just wrapped on this one. Unfortunately for us (or maybe fortunately for me), this one ended before the final mini-battle could take place at the Reichstag. A bit of a let down.
Below is my post game summary email to Mark:
Quote:
Hi Mark,
Tough fight! I'm too surprised that it ended early, a shame really but no doubt as to what the final outcome would of been.
I think that building with the HQ was the Air Ministry bldg, and so that must of been fat Goering in there fighting you off himself. :)
It would be tough for the German player to get a draw in a 2 player game I would think - there's just so much Russian equipment! I'm surprised that the flak guns lasted as long as they did, albeit they did very little damage to you.
I thought that the one hope that I had was that there were basically two "choke points" where your armor could get through. That could of been a big liability for you, but you played it well, leading the armor with your infantry and removing my threats in those areas. Once the tanks poured through, I had nothing to stop you. Loosing that KT (should say both of them) so easily was a real drawback as well.
Good game! We should do another if you want. If you have something in mind, send a set up any time.
This was very well played by Bannon. Maybe a tad bit overly cautious and thus he lost the time to take the 'stag, but he played it smartly and lost probably the barest of minimum that he could not help but to lose.
I thought my defense strategy was sound. Those two "choke points" were the key to my defense. I had 2 flak guns covering the northern point, and I placed the 3rd down in the woods covering the 2nd point. If Bannon had rushed in with his armor as I had hoped, he would of sustained quite a few more armor casualties and the tide of the battle might of changed. But, as noted, he played it smartly and led with his infantry and just overwhelmed me at every turn.
I wish'd I'd of kept that 2nd KT in place - might of gotten a few kills with it if I had.
Very fun - great job!

Turn 41... closing in on victory (or defeat).
Reichstag still stands and I'm running out of time to cross the last stretch. Rubble is slow going and a few fanatical German holdouts continue to pop up to slow me down even more. Troops low on ammo, but I have plenty of assault guns left. Firing at pitiful German squads with the big guns is like striking at a fly with a baseball bat. But it it the only effective weapon I have to continue the march.
GJK's second King Tiger reversed to cover the flanking road at I was able to get some tanks around that side of the map. BOGGED! in a crater and taken out by a T34 before he could swing his turret around. Crew abandoned it. Bad luck for him.
It is going to be close.

Thanks for the AAR and turn by turn play
This scenario has played well and I will be releasing an updated version soon. I will look into replacing the bridge. Not sure if I should add the rockets. The two forces are very close together in a fairly small space for such an inaccurate weapon to be used.
Thanks again

*I've located my 3 Flaks on the left flank in the wood-strip with separate LOF/LOS. I made sure that one of the 2 clear roads for the Russian armour was covered, the one at the Gestapo HQ I'm talking about. *My KingTigers were hidden beyond the Reichstag until I knew the location and strenght of what was coming. The same goes for the PSW222's. *My operaforces were divided between the opera and the houses at the upper side of the opera, creating a trapped road for armour. *I carefully placed the mg's and the PZfausts since they are the most important factor to win/lose. *I covered with lots of firepower the road between the scattered trees and the square of the Reichstag. *So, I gave the land between opera and that mentioned free to the Russians, of course I covered it with LOF of mg's and PSW's.

As Fred said, a fun battle indeed.
I did not play my best in this one as the King Tigers and Schrecks lurking everywhere kept me at bay.
A few things I believe the Russians need. More initial artillery rounds of big caliber spread over 2 or 3 more spotters. I would have like to see 10 rounds of 203mm for 3 spotters instead of one with 20 rds. This would provide me with some flexibility of impacting a few different areas at scenario startup. A small modification but I believe it would make the fighting better at the end.
Using not enough Smoke from my 500 rds of 82mm mortar was my downfall, I might have used 50 as smoke. Poor choice on my part.
The reinforcements for the Russians is about as perfect as can be, no tie ups on the entrance points.
The Opera House was a struggle as I sent a whole company that way. I did achieve my objective but that was about all I could do.
Luckly I got a King Tiger around turn 20, or else a bigger beating would have taken place.
A well done map, with loads of action provided me with much enjoyment, and it is always fun to play Fred who is a piece of work in his own mind.

Sounds like the battle was a lot fun.
It is always great when you think a battle is lost then pull off a an impressive victory.
Not sure if I should up the German AT ammo as it might upset the balance too much. Don't want to make it too hard to play the Russians but I will keep that in mind.
Thanks for the AAR and glad to hear from you again.

Ok What can I sayâŚ. Simply a great battle with loads of action. I apologize for taking so long to finish this off⌠My opponent, NYCPizzaDude did a great job but I believe got intimidated late by the âSchrecksâ and my one remaining King Tiger.
First off as I said early the map is nicely done and provides a great atmosphere for this battle. At last report I had lost one King Tiger and thought all was lost, but for the last 15 or so turns (it ended on turn 47) I just had my one King âhuntâ from out behind the south west corner of the Reichstag and then reverse back⌠I didnât use âShoot and Scootâ as I believe the Hunt and Reverse Commands provide better control on the âtargeting aspectâ⌠and it did work as told by the Kills for Unt Ober⌠11 AFV and 69 Infantry Casualties⌠a medal is due himâŚ!!!
The battle I thought was lost at about the halfway point, but a good solid stance by my guys really helped⌠Also Unt Ober popping out from behind the Reichstag forced my opponent to stay over behind the AT ditch by Gestapo HQ⌠This let two of my A/C come up the North Side of the Reichstag and thus any infantry appearing near the Konigsplatz was under fire from the HMGâs and A/C, which left Unt Ober to deal with any armor that showed it ugly face⌠this worked for the last 15 turns as I said beforeâŚ
I did not hold the Kroll Opera House as da PizzaDude had way too much infantry for me to hold him off for too long.. But I donât like opera anyway, so no biggyâŚ
All in All a really fun H2H scenario, Only thing I could see from the Axis point of view would be to âMaxâ out unit ammor (at least Grenadiers and HMGs)⌠I am sure my opponent will post his thoughts alsoâŚ
Thanks for a fun scenario, sorry for the delay, if you require any more info please feel free to contact me.
That is allâŚ

Richie Sorry for the delay in answering your post.
Does the total of Tigers include both SSPzAbt 503 and the SS 'Hermann von Salza' Battalion ?
Some of the information about Georg Diers can be found on pages 330-332 of 'Armor Battles of the Waffen SS' by Will Fey
Quote: The last few Tigers of the SS 'Hermann von Salza' Battalion had meanwhile been withdrawn to Tiergarten..." where I believe they had a field of fire over Konigsplatz and assisted in interdicting the Russian assault as mentioned on page 183 of 'Our Backs to Berlin'.
I am not sure if I can put these in the scenario. Even well blasted the woods of the Tiergarten must have reduced the LOS. They could of course have been firing down the streets. These would also been busy with the Russians attacking from the south.
I will put in a 128mm spotter if it is available. Not sure how else to represent the Zoo Bunker Flak guns. How did you solve this problem?
Quote: Interesting you talking about the counter attack of the Tigers on the 1st of May as your scenario Parameters indicate April, as does your briefing, "Date: April 30th, 1945."...
I found this error reading over the my material to answer your posts. I missed the critical "and the following day" in the text. It is on my list of things to fix.
Thanks for your input

Hi Warmonger,
Always happy to provide 'Historical' information and research on a scenario I've already covered...
Thanks for pointing out what goes on at TPG too, I must have missed that bit.
Quoting from 'Armor Battles of the Waffen SS' by Will Fey, page 318... "According to available reports, 5 Konigstigers and 6 Panzer IV's and Assault Guns were ready for action on May 1st". I think you'll find the majority of the others out of fuel in Tiergarten south of the Reichstag as mentioned on page 357 of Beevor's Berlin, "The last few Tigers of the SS 'Hermann von Salza' Battalion had meanwhile been withdrawn to Tiergarten..." where I believe they had a field of fire over Konigsplatz and assisted in interdicting the Russian assault as mentioned on page 183 of 'Our Backs to Berlin'.
Also mentions fire from the Zoo Bunker (or Zoo Flak Tower) pinning down the Soviets assaulting the Reichstag on Page 183 'Our Backs to Berlin', and in Beevor's 'Berlin', "The German Anti Aircraft Guns on top of the Zoo Bunker had opened up on them" crossing Konigsplatz, page 356. Line of site crosses directly over Tiergarten as you'd find in one of the first plates in the initial pages of Beevor's 'Berlin' and the Zoo Flak Tower dominated the landscape of Berlin with it's 4 twin 128mm guns and 12 multi barrelled 20mm & 37mm Flak guns. They also had no trouble shooting up Russian armour crossing Moltke Bridge when the smoke permitted LOS too.
Interesting you talking about the counter attack of the Tigers on the 1st of May as your scenario Parameters indicate April, as does your briefing, "Date: April 30th, 1945."...
No Worries Tom, Richie

This scenario is mainly based on the written accounts Untersharfuhrer Georg Diers. In late April the last 6 remaining Tiger 2s from sSSPzAbt 503 was attached to the 11 SS PG Div. By April 30th only 2 remained in service. Tiger 314 with Georg Diers and another Tiger that I believed was commanded by Hauptscharfuhrer Karl Korner who had been credited with destroying over 100 Russian tanks and 29 guns. Diers account tells of a successful counter attack on May 1st that he supported with his Tiger that temporarily recaptured the Kroll Oprea house. Before withdrawing at 7pm on May 1st he claims 39 Russian tanks destroyed and many more damaged during the fighting in Berlin. He mentions that there were Russian tanks in front of the Kroll Oprea house and that Russian Infantry has been abled to penetrate into the Reichstag during the Fighting. Dierâs Tiger was destroyed by itâs crew after being immbolized by mines near Schonhauser Alley. The other Tiger knocked out trying to cross the Spandau Bridge.
The scope of the scenario only covers a small Russian counter attack lasting around 45 minutes probally in the afternoon of May 1st, 1945. It would require a large operation to cover the entire battle. I heard no mention of the 128mm guns (right?) at the Flaktower firing at the Koingsplatz. I would imagine it would not have been a direct line of sight due to the buildings so they could be represented by a spotter.
Flooding parts of the anti-tank ditch is no problem.
I am not surprised that there were a lot more Germans in the area. There were probally a lot more Russians as well. I am thinking of adding more infantry on the German side and more armor on the Russian. But I also want to keep the game manageable and balanced. I will try and update this scenario and briefings soon. I will try and put in as many of your suggestions as possible.
Thanks a lot Warmonger

Really sorry if I appear to be abrupt in the following post but having taken 9 months of research for the 1 scenario where accuracy and balance were the prodominant factors and the scenario was destined as the final in a tournament, I strived to provide the best I could.
Oh yeah, spotted the ISU 152's as reserves...

Hi Warmonger,
I was going to scan in and email you pictures and maps from "Our Backs to Berlin" but since this was in breach of copyright I decided not to. The book itself contains quite detailed maps and much specific information on force mix provided by SS Sergeant Major Willi Rogmann of the Leibstandarte. I wouldn't take it all as gospel but it provides a very accurate picture of force mix and defences. It shouldn't be to hard to track it down.
There were 500+ Germans in the building. Sailors from Donitz and Paratroopers from the Ninth plus around 100 Volkssturm and the SS. The account provided by SS Sergeant Major Willi Rogmann is colourful, but as a veteran of the battle I would believe the basics.
Page 355 (and other pages) of Beevor's "Berlin" also mentions the defences, trenches, wire and the fact that the U bahn Tunnel, or anti tank ditch is flooded. I only see references to 'Himmlers House' or 'The Interior Ministry'on the website you cite as a reference and in Beevor's book.
Fey's information from 'Armor Battles of the Waffen SS' cites 'about 30 T-34's aiming their guns at the Reichstag', p 330. Perhaps some more T-34's then?

Unfortunately both Tigers were commanded by Tank Aces with well over 100 confirmed kills each so it is hard not to reflect this in thier skill rating.
One tactic you may want to consider is to hunt them with your artillery instead of your tanks. If you can get close with your infantry you might be able to immobolise them.
Historically the Russians failed in this attack. However later in the evening the Tigers had to withdraw to rearm and refuel and the Russians took advantage of that to capture the Reichstag. The Tigers tried to retreat out of Berlin but were immobolised by mines and destroyed by their crews.
Good luck

I am PTing this one with Gen. FAilure right now - really excellent scenario. I am playing Russians so I have to ask - do the KT's have to be ELite ? All AFV's gone - last charge of the URRAH on turn 43 to take the 'Stag ... let you know how it turns out!

Comrade --
Pleased to report that Kroll Opera House has fallen to valient Russian troops. Mopping up inside the auditorium. Stiff resistance in direction of Reichstag. Have only achieved one block. One King Tiger knocked out... the other narrowly escaped artillery barrage. 88 still controls the plaza. Measures to smash final resistance underway.
We just passed the half-way point... about turn 22.

Thanks for the comments. The gestapo error must be due to error on my map material. I will try and fix that. I knew that the "anti-tank" ditch was a collasped subway tunnel and this is stated in the German briefing. I could not see any wire or trenches in the photographs and maps that I used. Does any of your scources show these locations? There is no mention of the Volksturm in the area but they probally were. Do you have any information on what units and thier strength and locations? There are SU152s in this battle but they arrive a little later as reinforcements. The Russian armor mix is based on Photographs of Russian equipment in the area shortly after the battle was over so this can be subject of debate.
If you can send me any info on these points let me know.

Hi Warmonger,
Posted before in the General Thread and emailed you but no reply. Interesting to see some one cover the same battle I had in B&T Battle for the Reichstag. There's a great book by Tony Le Tissier, Our Backs to Berlin that discusses in detail the German OB and fortifications on the day as by eyewitness account. Lot's of great maps, diagrams and photos. Your map looks really nice but a couple of points... The building marked as Gestapo HQ is infact the Interior Ministry or Himmlers House, Gestapo HQ is blocks away on Prinz Albrecht Strasse. The anti tank ditch is actually a flooded U-bahn tunnel and station. Your German set up lacks any trench or barbed wire network that was extensive on the day. You've also left out the Naval personnel, the Volkssturm that were involved in the fighting on the day/s of the battle. There were also ISU 152's involved in the fighting. More than happy to email you any additional info/photo's you may require... Richie

*** UPDATE FROM THE FRONT ***
News flash - Fredrocker is holding his own as the Axis vs the NYCPizzzaDude. After 28 minutes of fighting the battlefield is a bloody mess... I am stationed in the upper floors of the Kroll Opera Theater and I can see the Russian Swine invading through the Koingsplazt towards the Reichstag. Their are german and russian bodies everywhere... I count at least a half dozen destroyed russian vehicles....WOW... what was that... just to the left of my window a King Tiger that has been firing in the direction of Gestapo HQ has gone up in flames... oh my... this is terrible... I see Russians storming down the street towards the Opera House... I am not sure how long I can stay on the air... I am going to try and work my way down the Zelten Allee to the woods where I see an Amored Car and King Tiger firing on the Russian Armor stuck in the tank ditch... I will sign back on and keep you posted...
This is 'The Beast of Parroy' reporting on TPG radio... over and out for now!!!!
That is all...

Hi Panzerman
Thanks for play testing this one. This is certainly a tough fight. Historically the Tigers temporiarily stopped the Russians but they could not stop the Russians from taking the Reichstag after the armor withdrew to rearm. The location of that 88 was based on a photograph taken of the Konigsplatz several days after the battle which showed a knocked out 88 in that area. Perhaps a very hasty position at best. I find the 88s usually have a short life time in any case due to the large 122mm and 152mm HE shells fired by the Russians. The Russian AI seems to do a poor job with it's artillery. When I played the Russians I had most of the Reichstag in ruins from my large calibre artillery fire. Hopefully the map is fairly accurate as it is based on a map plus photographs. The collasped subway tunnel/anti-tank ditch was a bit tricky. Any way thanks for the input. It was good to hear from you!

668 Russian WIA, 183 KIA. (AI) vs myself as the Germans with 186 WIA, and 83 KIA. I destroyed 14 Russian AFVs, for the loss of three of my five of my own. It ended in a draw. Since it was a draw it didn't really look at the flags. Most were contested at the end (turn 51!). I would have ended up with more points if it had ended even two turns sooner, but a draw, considering the weight of the Soviet attack seemed good to me. Really enjoyed fighting this one out. It was nice to see the Soviets with the firepower they needed to take out the KTs. It was a slow, street, to street fight, and I made the AI pay for every one of them. At the half way point they already had over 300 WIA. The map was well constructed, and allowed for good lines of sight, although I do wonder about the placement of some of the 88s, I mean would they have left that one right out in the middle with no cover?
