A Very British Civil War
Note: this is clearly a “what-if” scenario, loosely based on the bustling miniatures war gaming off-shoot of the same name. Outstanding work has been done by Solway Crafts and Miniatures, and I credit them with the brilliance of this war gaming theme.

England, May 1938 (designer note: note the in-game calendar notes “1944”; this is only to create the optics of lush green environment of the British Isles)

The very social fabric of Great Britain was torn during the apocalypse that was The Great War. The mightiest empire on the globe ended victorious, but at what cost? The rigid social hierarchy was shaken, and the world wide waves of social change did not stop at the English Channel. Class structure, worker’s rights, regional animosities have all brewed in the decades following the Great War. This has all been exacerbated by the crippling economic crisis of the 1930s, to which the ever cautious government responded to by constricting public spending ever more.
In May 1937, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom married Wallis Simpson. The marriage to Wallis was not supported by Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister; and King Edward refused to abdicate. This marriage left the British government, and most of the people, alienated; and public hatred for King Edward and Queen Wallis rose. Parliament was torn, and in the general election of 1937, Baldwin was defeated. The Conservative party, ripped by the issue of King Edward’s marriage, as well as economic and regional tensions, broke apart, and a large segment of the Tory support went to the British Union of Fascists. Oswald Mosley’s promise to ensure public order, and shore up the Empire, resonated with a public tired of public disturbances, strikes in essential services, and the economic malaise. The Labour party too split, with the more radical sections forming their own splinter parties which ran their own candidates. The 1937 election results saw a fractured parliament, and although only winning slightly over 200 seats, and less than 30% of the vote, the BUF formed the largest caucus in the House of Commons. King Edward VIII asked Oswald Mosely to form a government. Mosley did so and almost immediately issued “Orders of Council”, outlawing strikes, restricting collective bargaining, and establishing new offences for unauthorized public gatherings, and publishing “any article intended to alarm the public”. Any opposition was swiftly responded to, if not by the police, then by Mosely’s own BUF Blackshirts, the BUF’s paramilitary wing.
In January 1938, a protest by Dockyard workers in Liverpool was brutally crushed by the BUF and elements of the Regular Army; and violent clashes began across the country; between the Kings troops and those of several other factions. The British Civil War has begun!

Factions: The outbreak of conflict led several groups to attempt to seize the country or their own personal goals. Major factions included:
On the Right (Axis in this scenario
* The Edwardian Army – elements of the professional Army, bound to King Edward VIII.
* The Royal Navy and Royal Marines – bound by tradition and culture to remain loyal to the reigning monarch, and the majority have done so.
* The British Union of Fascists (or “BUF”) – the dominant political party, led by Oswald MOSLEY and heavily backed by German and Italian interests. Mosley has garnered considerable support in his efforts to restore order internally and restore the status of Britain’s Empire
* The Mosley Youth – a “social club” of young men, who have been drilled and armed by unknown sources, and have formed para-military units to push the BUF agenda.
* Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Contingents from other fascist and imperialist sympathizers have been formed. Here we will see the presence of the “Hanoverian Legion”, volunteers from Germany, who are backing the Edwardian and BUF efforts
On the Left (Allied in this scenario)
* The Albertine Army – elements of the regular forces, plus most of the “Territorial Army”, backing the young Prince Albert’s claim to the throne.
* The Anglican League - A large army led by a group of bishops and archbishops, they were aligned with the Albertine Army. Many are veterans of the Great War.
* The People’s Party Army - Made up of disillusioned Labour party supporters, disgruntled workers and Spanish Civil War veterans, they are seeking to turn Britain into a Socialist state based upon Lenin's Russia.
* The Farmer’s Union: radical small plot farmers and farm working hands, seeking better pay, price subsidies, and land redistribution. They are heavily influenced by Marxist doctrine.
* The Student’s Union: like students before and after them, the university students have ramparts to thwart whomever they view as authoritarian,
* Foreign Volunteer Units: after the recruiting of numerous foreign elements to fight in the Spanish Civil War, similar detachments have been formed to back those with similar agendas in the British Civil War. Groups of Americans, Canadians, and ANZAC units have been formed; here we will see the Lafayette Battalion, formed of French volunteers, many fresh from the savage fighting in Spain.
This scenario occurs in the West Coast port town of Twaddlemore. Twaddlemore is the home base for a small Royal Navy destroyer flotilla, as well as being a mid-sized port for international commerce. Given that the United Kingdom lives or dies based on this freedom to trade overseas, the port is vital to all in this conflict. The Royal Navy, which for the most part has remained loyal to King Edward VIII, dispatched the flotilla two days ago to join the rest of the fleet, tasked with stemming the flow of foreign volunteers coming to fight for their faction of choice. Many of these foreigners have come directly from fighting for the Nationalists or the Republicans in Spain, who have endured two years of their own brutal Civil War already.
Yesterday the dock workers, who are heavily influenced by communist agents and are affiliated with the People’s Party, refused to move armaments stored in the dock warehouses. Instead, they armed themselves and fighting broke out when security staff sought to control the situation. Who opened fire first is both in dispute and a moot point at this juncture. A company of the Army’s Provost Corps was rushed to Twaddlemore by train, but a bomb was used to derail the trail just outside of town. Multiple factions are either in town currently or rumoured to be headed this way. The Telephone Exchange is the key to communicating with the rest of the country, and is clearly a goal to secure. Likewise, the docks and the armaments stored there in are also of immense value. Lastly, the mysterious new Wireless Tower being built on the south shore is of unknown value, as the work crews are from “away” and appear to be quite Teutonic in manner.
This battle will surely prove that the term “Civil War” is clearly a misnomer.

A meeting engagement played out in the wooded terrain of the Ardennes at the beginning of the Bulge. 60+ turns.

The Germans are trying to seize important territory: bridges, cross-roads, and towns to allow breakthrough armored thrusts. Central to this map is the village of L’Shone and its surrounding road network.

The Americans are trying to occupy the same terrain to prevent its use by the Germans.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again.
You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case.
Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island.
The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office.
And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about.
The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm.
You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise.
The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job.
You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now.
The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead.
Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre.
The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off.
At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”

Heavy Tanks of the 4th DCR must smash a hole in the advancing German line - but there are complications.
At Dornot, the U.S. Third Army's XX Corps' first attempt to establish a bridgehead on the Moselle River south of Metz met bloody failure. Two and a half miles south of Dornot the XX Corps' 10 Infantry Regiment is trying once more to establish a permanent bridgehead across the Moselle at Arnaville. Since the first U.S. troops crossed at Arnaville on the night of 8/9 September, the Germans have been launching increasingly vicious counterattacks in an effort to destroy the bridgehead and repeat what happened at Dornot.
This is an Aug 44 meeting engagement between Brit and German mech forces in Belgium. The map is based on a satellite photo of Neubruck just southeast of St. Vith.
Cassino town was destroyed by Allied Airforces on Wednesday, March 15th, along with the abby known as Monte Cassino. "The town was blown assunder and beaten into heaps of rubble, the official British history reported. Yet hundreds of bombs and thousands of shells failed to pound the town to powder, contrary to Allied expectations, nor were the surviving defenders 'rendered comatose', as planned." --The Day of Battle

In recent weeks, this industrial center has been the scene of increasingly sharp clashes between recon units and regular forces. Both sides have traded jabs over this important airplane fabrication city. Both have moved into the town and then been forced out again. No one seems to be able to hold it. The landing gear assembly plant on the edge of town was occupied by the Red Army a few days ago and then burned and destroyed as the Wehrmacht forced them out. Much of the town lies untouched, but the workers and residents know it is just a matter of time before a major battle rages through the streets of their city…

After another bloody engagement, both sides have backed off. Again, in the still of a Sunday morning under the cover of a pounding rainstorm, both sides push forces forward to gain possession of the city.

No one is sure where the front lines lie. Is the enemy in front of you? Or is he gone?

In the northern Caucaus, along the Terek river line, the battle has been raging brutally for nearly two months. Germany's 13.Panzer-Division tasked with taking the key junction city of Vladikavkaz (Ordzhonikidze) has been stymied in it's every attempt to breakthrough.

But now, at the end of October a break has been achieved through the first mountain range and panzers are rolling along the valley near Ardon, on a back route to Vladikavkaz.

The Russians, somewhat disorganized, are withdrawing to new positions. A desperate stand is ordered to slow the German advance and buy time to set-up the new defensive positions.

Now the Germans broke through the American line of defense in the Ardennes and are advancing rapidly towards this town.

Can the Allied commander hold this town?
November 1944, the French 2nd Armored Division is tasked to breach the German fortified line of the Vosges mountains. This battle takes place on the second days of the attack. The different French Task forces are competing with each other in order to be the first to reach the plain of Alsace. The company team Minjonnet (part of the Task Force Massu) blocked close to Voyer in a narrow valley by German remnants of the 708. ID has to bypass quickly this resistance. The French can be sure that their old enemy is not about to ease their action !

Normandy - known for its rolling fields, orchards, stud farms and a good glass of cider. Sheltered from the elements which can pound the coastline this is a landscape is carpeted in apple blossom. It is here, at the heart of one of the best designated cider producing areas that you will find the Chateau les Bruyîres, an Empire period residence and 18th century manor house - run by the Wehrmacht. It is your task to put an end to this inappropriate ownership.

Follow the swift Donet's campaign the IInd SS panzer Korps stands poised for the final push too retake Kharkov and restore the pride of the Waffen SS, but they have too cross the Mzha river first.

This is a huge (actually 5 x 4 km) map representing a piece of French countryside west of the town of Arras. It is flat (gentle slopes) and moderately populated with villages, forests, orchards and the like. It is suitable for a massive battle of regiment-sized forces (15,000 points or more).

The axis forces have captured the ridge east of Lieso. It´s been quiet over a month, so they have had enough time to dig deep in the ridge.

Allied forces are attacking with brutal force from east. Tuomari-Laurila has already been taken.
The axis forces are about to assault a little town called Lieso in aim to capture a road that leads through a ridge to deeper east. The allied forces are dug in somewhere around the old elementary school.
A small river splits a large map, with lots of roads and 6 bridges to control and a town also to control. This map is for meeting engagements and no side has a terrain advantage. Hopefully this will boil down to your choice of units and your game play.

This was a work in progress for the cancelled CM Campaigns. Maps are both operations and battles. Four maps included. One is large version (75% accurate scale) of the entire fortress of Brest Litovsk and immediate area. Others are 2 km x 2 km maps of the north and south portions of the fortress. I know it was UK and not USSR! but i didnt own CMAK when i made the level and i dont want to do everything over again so USSR must equal UK! its a fun level with the FJ troops in the greatest air invasion prior to D-Day.

This CMBO map is built from a topographical map of the little town of Seville, NE of Melbourne, Australia. My idea was to lauch a Brit brigade (3 btns) across it at a German static defence screening mobile reserves.
Desiliens is an ancient Roman town. The map features the ruins of the town, an aquaduct, and the ruins of a villa on a low central hill.

The eastern side of the map is mostly woods, the west is hills and farms. It is most suitable for an assault on the town, but if the focus is shifted to the ruined villa it would be good for a meeting engagement.

It's essential in CM to study the map before the start and visualise a Big Picture in your mind of how the battle will go.
It works in real-life too, as the following extract from Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf 's autobiog "It Doesn't Take a Hero" illustrates, in which he says (page 158) the "most brilliant tactical commander i'd ever known" was (then Colonel) Ngo Quang Truong of the South Vietnamese Army who had this ability to see the big picture.

Schwarzkopf was a Major at the time and worked closely with him.
"He did not look like my idea of a military genius" says Schwarzkopf, "only five feet seven,in his mid-forties,very skinny...yet he was revered by his troops and feared by those North Vietnamese commanders who knew his ability."
Schwarzkopf goes on:-
"It was fascinating to watch him operate.As we marched, he would stop to study the map,indicate a position and say "fire artillery here". I was skeptical at first but called in the barrages; when we reached the area we found bodies. Simply by visualising the terrain and drawing on his experience fighting the enemy for 15 years,Truong showed an uncanny ability to predict what they were going to do.
When we set up our command post that night, Truong opened his map, lit a cigarette and outlined his battle plan. The strip of jungle between our position on the ridges and the river,he explained, made a natural corridor - the route the NVA would most likely take. He said 'At dawn we will send out one battalion and put it here on our left as a blocking force between the ridge and the river. Around 8 o'clock tomorrow morning they will make a big enemy contact. Then i will send another battalion here to our right. They will make contact at about 11 o'clock. I want you to have your artillery ready to fire into this area in front of us, and then we will attack with our 3rd and 4th battalions down toward the river. The enemy will then be trapped with the river at his back.'
"I'd never heard anything like this at West Point.." said Schwarzkopf.
The battle went exactly to plan, and Schwarzkopf writes "We'd scored a decisive victory!"

That's why i'm posting this in the Playtest Tactics section, as its essential to play CM the same way, by studying the map and the forces etc before the start (don't rush it) so that you begin the game with a solid plan right from the start.
Of course, scen designers too should try to see it and visualise accordingly when creating their masterpieces..

I probably goe farthest in this regard! I use multi layered battle maps for every scenario I test or PBEM (incl. boundary lines, enemy and friendly pos, height contours, ect.) I still wonder that most game companies fail to implement something similar into their games. Roll Eyes

In fact I´m studying the german doctrinal and tactical principles that were taught in WW2 and try to apply them as good as possible while playing CM (and other wargames). So far I can tell...it really works! Way of thinking, as well as evaluation of terrain, friendly and enemy possibilities ect. changes to more military like. Here´s the list of stuff in my possession that I keep studying for this purpose (..not necessarily making me a superior CM player LOL):


1. "Die Soldatenfibel" (Soldiers Manual), 8th issue, released probably between 1930-33. This was probably the main german brochure for training single soldier basic matters, like basic weapon handling and basic theory about tasks of the infantry squad ect. (116 pages)

2. "H.Dv 130/2a - Ausbildungsvorschrift fĂĽr die Infanterie Heft 2a, Die SchĂĽtzenkompanie" (Army field regulation 130/2a, The Rifle Company). Issue from 1942. Explains all matters dealing with training of the single rifleman and infantry squad, including supporting units like 50mm mortars, light machine guns, AT rifle ect. Many tactic manuals make reference to this field regulation. Very detailed and comprehensive (255 pages).

3. "Die Gruppe der SchĂĽtzenkompanie zu 12 Gruppen, Lehrbeispiele und Aufgaben fĂĽr den UnterfĂĽhrer der aktiven Truppe, der Reserve und der Landwehr" (The infantry squad in the rifle company, comprised of 12 squads, instruction examples and lessons for the NCO of the active forces, the reserve and inactive reservists). 17th Issue from 1941. This is an excellent and informative training manual that deals with squad tactics, with relation to platoon and company formations. (140 pages)

4. "Das Kommandobuch, Buch1 - Die SchĂĽtzenkompanie" (The command book, book1 - the Rifle Company) 24th issue from 1941. This useful little book contains tons of of highly condensed instructions and lessons from other manuals for use for the infantry officer in infantry companies! This is meant to be a reference book that contains all info in brief and compact form. (275 pages)

5. "Gefechts-Fibel" (Combat manual) 6th issue, 1937. Another book that contains instruction examples for certain combat situations and training them for the rifle platoon and company. Very detailed and informative! (93 pages)

6. "Kriegsspiel-Fibel - Kriegsspiel in kleinerem Rahmen" (Wargame manual - small frame wargaming) 2nd issue, probably early 30ies. Hehe This really existed at those times! This little brochure deals with military style wargaming to train infantry platoon/company actions on map boards or in a sand box! (100 pages)

7. "Taktik im Rahmen des verstärkten Infanterie-Bataillons" (tactics within the frame of a reinforced infantry bataillon by Greiner/Degener) 5th issue, 1941. Very detailed book showing comprehensive examples and tactical solutions for infantry bataillons with attached reinforcements, like AT, IG, mortars, ect. My favourite! (222 pages)

8. "Ergänzungsheft zur H.Dv.316, Pionierdienst aller Waffen" (Supplementing brochure for the army field regulation 316 - Engineer service of all branches) Issue 1941. Not the whole field regulation, but it contains lots of highly interesting info that deal with smaller field engineering matters like making obstacles, crossing streams (on smaller scale), building small bridges, building field fortifications ect. (105 pages)

9. "H.Dv.73 - SchieĂźvorschrift fĂĽr das schwere Maschinengewehr" (army field regulation 73 - Shooting regulations for the heavy machine gun) Issue 1937. This deals very detailed with the MG34 in heavy machine gun (tripod) role. Lots about ballistics, aiming and aiming devices and usage, shoot training ect. This is more a technical manual and less a tactics manual (see #41 further below). 165 pages

10. "Deutsch-Russisches Soldaten-Wörterbuch, Rund 3000 Wörter für Feldgebrauch und tägliches Leben" (German-Russian Soldiers Dictionary, About 3000 words for field service and daily life) Issue 1941. Well..just that! Interesting to know what a german soldier was supposed to know about russian language at the russian front.

11. "Der Kompaniechef" (The company chief) Written by a company commander and published in 1940. An "old school" (as opposed to nazi indoctrinated) view of what makes a good company commander in german army of the early war years. Very interesting to learn about the "spirit" of the german officer corps of that time. (47 pages)

12. "Artilleristische Schiessaufgaben, Erläuterung der Schießvorschrift an Hand von 38 Beispielen" (Artillery shooting lessons, Explanation of the shooting regulations at hand of 38 examples) 2nd Issue, 1940. Very interesting book showing examples how german artillery was used to solve certain combat tasks until 1940. This book addresses artillery officers and specialists. (191 pages)

13. "H.Dv. 125/2 - Fernmeldetechnik im Heere, Buch2, Fernsprechtechnik" (army field regulation 125/2, telecommunications in the army, book2, telephone technics) Issue 1939. A detailed technical manual for telecommunications people. No relation on usage within combat units.

14. "Kampferlebnisse aus dem Feldzug gegen Sowjetrußland 1941/42" (combat experiences from the campaign against the soviet union in 1941/42) Published by the wartime history departement of the german OKH in 1943. Very good stuff for scenario design. Contains detailed info about participating units (regimental down to company level), as well as includes useful combat maps. True unit designations weren´t used (wartime classification!), but you can easily find out by time and place what units were described. (84 pages)

15. "Taschenbuch fĂĽr den Winterkrieg, 1942" (pocket book about winter warfare, 1942). Issue november 1942 (270 pages). Wow! Very detailed! Everything about war in the mud and winter at the eastern and arctic front![8D] Also a good reading for the next winter holiday season!:D

16. "Das verstärkte Bataillon - Führungsgrundlagen und Befehlsbeispiele" ( The reinforced bataillon - Basics of Leadership and examples of orders). Published 1942, 3rd issue. Very interesting little book that already contains experiences from the war in the east! (83 pages) The author of the 3rd issue was on active duty on the eastern front (Col. Wilhelm Falley). The original author K.W. Uebe (1st and 2nd issue) was KIA in the 1939 poland campaign.

17. "H.Dv. 130/9 - Ausbildungsvorschrift fĂĽr die Infanterie, FĂĽhrung und Kampf der Infanterie, Das Infanterie Bataillon" (Army training regulation for the infantry, Leadership and combat of the infantry, The infantry bataillon) This was the main german army field regulation that deals with general combat and leadership principles within an infantry bataillon. Most german "tactics" manuals either are based on this or make reference to it. Issue 1940. (160 pages)

18. "Offiziersthemen - Ein Handbuch fĂĽr den Offiziersunterricht" (Officer topics, a handbook for education of officers). 9th issue from 1943. (78 pages)

19. "Artilleristisches Merkheft" (artillery notebook) 13th issue from 1941. Condensed form of various artillery basics, like deploying guns, ranging and setting up guns for shooting, tasks of the various artillery crew members as well as FO´s and such. (63 pages)

20. "Das Nachtgefecht - Die Ausbildung der Infantrie fĂĽr das Gefecht bei Dunkelheit im Bewegungskriege" (Night Combat - Training of infantry for the combat at darkness in the war of movement). Issue from 1936 (144 pages). Very interesting and very detailed. Many tactical lessons from regiment down to platoon level!

21. "H.Dv. 130/2b - Ausbildung fĂĽr die Infanterie, Heft 2 - Die SchĂĽtzenkompanie" (army training manual 130/2a, book2) This is the continuation of book 1, H.Dv 130/2a listed further above. Deals with training of infantry platoon and company formation. Issue from 1936.

22. "H.Dv 299/3 (A.V.K) - Ausbildungsvorschrift fĂĽr die Kavallerie/Die Radfahrerschwadron" (Army training regulation for cavalry - the byciclist squadroon) Actually a regulation dealing with cavalry formation unit (byciclists), but also applies to the byciclist squadroon (platoon) of the infantry (or late war volksgrenadiers ect.) divisions recon elements, structured and equipped in the same manner. Issue from 1937, 139 pages.

23. "Geländebeschreibung und Geländebeurteilung" (Terrain description and -evaluation). A small training brochure, 30 pages, issue from 1940.

24. "H.Dv. 300 Teil1 TruppenfĂĽhrung (T.F)" (Army regulation describing general principles for command and leadership with regards to combat missions on all command levels ect.) 300 pages, issue from 1933. (..and yet another from 1938)

25. "Technisches Hilfsbuch fĂĽr Funker" (technical support manual for radio operators). Deals with technical and electrical aspects, radio operators are assumed to learn. Not an official regulation. 80 pages, from 1942.

26. "H.Dv.200/4 - Ausbildungsvorschrift fĂĽr die Artillerie (A.V.A), Heft4 - Ausbildung der bespannten Batterie" (training regulation for artillery, part4 - training of the horse drawn battery). 32 pages, from 1934.

27. "Gelände ABC" (ground terrain a-b-c), very similar to #23 above. More detailed and with various sketches, as well as various small lessons/exercises on how to read maps, use compass and other means. 86 pages, from 1942.

28. "H.Dv. 316 - Pionierdienst aller Waffen (All.Pi.D.)" (army regulation, engineering service/training for all weapon branches). Meant to be used for all non dedicated Pioniere (engineers), also called "Weisse Pioniere" (white engineers, due to weapon code "white" = infantry branch). Very detailed, includes all possible aspects of basic engineer training for non dedicated engineer troops. Removing/building obstacles, crossing streams, demolitions, improving terrain for movement, field fortifications, bivouac and more. (Note: mine laying/removing was task of dedicated engineers and topic not included in this regulation!) 444 pages, issue from 1935 updated to 1938 standards. Note: #8 further above updates it to 1941 standards, which includes wartime experience from poland and france camapign.

29. "Kompanie-Ausbildung im Feldheer" (company training of frontline army units). Deals with various aspects of continued training of company sized infantry units serving in/near the frontline. (updating personell on latest regulations/tactics, training replacements ect.)
45 pages, from 1942.

30. "H.Dv. 100 - Krankenträgerordnung (Kt.O.)" (regulation for stretcher bearers) Interesting read. 166 pages, from 1935.

31. "H.Dv. 130/4 - Ausbildungsvorschrift für die Infanterie (A.V.I.) Heft 4a . Die Infanteriegeschützkompanie" (training regulation for the infantry gun company). Very interesting read and very enlighting for those who think the german infantry guns IG 18, 33, 37, 42 were mainly used and employed as DIRECT fire artillery! NO, they were not. Indirect fire was the rule and direct fire rather the exception! If you just check the guns (howitzers!) stats like MV (very low, except the late war hybrid weapons), gun elevation (high trajectory up to 75°), range (low-medium) ect. you actually quickly notice that employing these weapon systems in direct fire mode puts them in great hazards from enemy direct fire as well! Infantry gun personell thus is fully trained in indirect targeting just like normal artillery personnell is.
202 pages, from 1937 (and yet another updated in 1941).

32. "H.Dv.240 - SchieĂźvorschrift fĂĽr Gewehr (Karabiner), leichtes Maschinengewehr, Pistole, usw. (SCHV.F.GEW.)" (shooting regulation for rifle/carbine, light machine gun, pistol, ect.). Similar to #9 above, this regulation deals with ballistics, shooting principles, training, ect. of G98, K98k, MG08, MG 13, MG34, P08, as well as includes a section about training with hand grenades. Quite interesting, with lots of tables. Original issue from 1934, updated to 1938 standards, 162 pages.

33: "Taschenbuch fĂĽr den Artilleristen" (pocket book for the artillerist). This interesting little book was published by the "Rheinmetall/Borsig" arms company which part of is still located in my home town Dusseldorf. This book covers almost every topic related to artillery technology, history, gun construction, targeting equipment, ballistics ect. Issue from 1942, 284 pages.

34: "HANDBUCH FĂśR FLAKARTILLERISTEN - Der Kanonier - Waffen und Ausbildung der Flakbatterie - 8,8cm Flak und 2cm Flak" (handbook for AA artillerymen - the gunner - Weapons and Training of the AA battery - 8,8cm Flak and 2cm Flak). Issue from 1941, 204 pages.

35: "Praktische Ballistik für Artilleristen - Erste Einführung in die Außenballistik und einfache ballistische Näherungsverfahren" (praktical ballistics for artillery personel - First introduction to outer ballistics and simple ballistic approximation methods). Issue from 1943, 84 pages. This is for those people who understand lots of mathematics...or IOW...not for me! LOL

36: "Gelände- und Kartenkunde - Leitfaden für miltärisches Aufnehmen und Kartenwesen für Offiziere, Offiziersanwärter und Wehrsportler sowie zum Selbstunterricht" (Terrain- and Map knowledge - Guide for military surveying and mapping for officers, NCO´s and army sports as well as self education.) Issue from 1939, 138 pages. Detailed and comprehensive, includes everything you need to know about the military aspect of the topics terrain and mapping.

37: "HD.V 130/4 - Ausbildungsvorschrift fĂĽr die Infanterie (A.V.I.) Heft 4a . Die InfanteriegeschĂĽtzkompanie" (training regulation for the infantry gun company). Same as #31 but more actual version from 1941. Includes a couple of changes made necessary due to wartime experiences.

38: "Die (neue) Gruppe (Gr)" (something like "The (new) squad"). This actually is the follow up training manual from #1 "Die Soldatenfibel" at the top of the list (superseded by #3. "Die Gruppe der SchĂĽtzenkompanie...") Deals with all sorts of squad training and tactics. Issue from around ~1930-34, 119 pages.

39. "Die Pionierfibel - Pi.F" (The engineer booklet). Another little book from the famous "Fibel" series. A very educational version of the engineer field regulation like H.Dv. 316 further above. (field works, crossing and removing obstacles ect.) Issue from mid 30ies, 155 pages.

40. "Die Kavallerie Fibel K. F" (the cavalry booklet). Condensed form of field regulations for cavalry men from mid 30ies, 138 pages.

41. "Der Feuerkampf des s. M.G." (employment and fire principles of the heavy MG) Fire commands and actions in open and covered positions. Very interesting little book giving insights about how a HMG crew operates under different battlefield conditions. Includes training (combat) situations and describes actions and commands of each crewmember. Issue from 1940, 139 pages.

42. "Die MG Kompanie - Ein Handbuch fĂĽr den Dienstunterricht" (the MG company - a handbook for the service education) Very similar to the well known "REIBERT" series of books, this is a specialized version for the general education of MG troops on company level. Issue from 1939,274 pages.

43. "Taktische Zeichen des Heeres" (tactical icons of the army) Little book that contains a complete list of the tactical signs of german army before they were slightly overhauled in 1942/43. Issue from 1938, 72 pages.

44. "H.Dv. 200/2g - Ausbildungsvorschrift fĂĽr die Artillerie (A.V.A) - Ausbildung einer Batterie l.F.H 18 (Army training regulation for the artillery - education of a battery 10.5cm l.FH 18). Issue from 1937, 228 pages.

45. "H.Dv. 200/6 Teil1 - Ausbildungsvorschrift fĂĽr die Artillerie (A.V.A) - SchieĂźvorschrift Teil1 (Army training regulation for the artillery - shooting regulation). Very detailed about how germans used artillery with regard to shooting principles, ballistics, ranging, combat tasks, ect. Issue from 1943 (print 1944), 212 pages.

46. "Artilleristischer Ratgeber auf dem Gefechtsfeld - Oberstltn. Kruse" (Artilleristic adviser on the battle field - from LtCol. Kruse) Compressed knowledge about artillery matters/tactics/methods on the battle field for artillery commanders up to Btl. (Abteilung) commanders. The most important topics from the numerous field regulations are included. Quite useful little pocket book. 250 pages, from 1940.

47. "Der Dienst in der Kompanie - von Hauptmann Klaus Stock" ( The service in the company - from Major Klaus Stock) This book gives an excellent overview about the training plans and measures of a regular infantry company from the view of the training company chief. Gives a good idea about what makes a german "regular" infantryman when the full year training was applied. 230 pages, from 1937.

48. "Gefechtsführung und Kampftechnik - 14 Aufgaben zum taktischen Selbststudium mit Lösungen und kurzen Besprechungen im Rahmen des verstärkten Infanterie Bataillons von Greiner und Degener" (Battle guidance and combat technics - 14 lessons for the tactical self-instruction with solutions and short discussions in the context of the reinforced infantry battalion by LtCol.
